Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Former Harringay resident, Jeremy Corbyn, has emerged as a front-runner in the Labour leadership contest in a survey conducted by Labourlist.

His bid is based on an anti-austerity economic policy. His nomination is supported by neighbouring MPs Catherine West, Diane Abbott, Kate Osamor and Emily Thornberry.

Corbyn lived on Lausanne Road for many years, represented Harringay ward on the Council, and was the Chair of the Planning Committee until his election to Parliament in 1983.

... and played a large part in pushing for turning the bombed out area between Falkland Rd & Fairfax Rd into a green space back in the early 80s, now the very well used Fairland Park (was known as Falkland Fairfax Open Space). Between the war and being turned into a park prefab housing was in place.

Corbyn struggled to get 30 nominations from Labour MPs in order to stand for the leadership.

Most Labour MPs were appalled to see him emerge as his hard Left views have always been a vote loser in national elections. The Tories would like to see him lead the Labour party as it would guarantee the Tories stayed in power for a long time.

Corbyn's time on Haringey Council was marked by the council being rated at the bottom of most national league tables, especially education, social services and housing. This is despite local ratepayers paying some of the highest rates in the UK.

Perhaps you might explain his increased majority in the General Election? He stands for the things people actually agree with; more council housing, stopping the farce of austerity etc. If people voted according to their opinions, the Green Party would have won the General Election. Policies such as renationalising British Rail, ending the tax dodging of individuals and corporations, massive social housing investment, and opposing wars are all massively popular......
