Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council is encouraging property developers to ruin our borough

This article "The truth about property developers: how they are exploiting planning authorities and ruining our cities" is a few months old but is very relevant to what is happening in Haringey.

The consultation on Haringey's Local Development Plans closes today and these plans, if left unchecked, will forever change Haringey. The Council is encouraging property developers to wreck Haringey, especially Tottenham; allowing the loss of community assets, open spaces and essential social housing. They are promoting mass development with huge tower blocks which dominate neighbourhoods and block sunlight from many streets and creating high density housing which leads to a more stressed environment for everyone.

Why? So that developers can make a killing selling 'safe-deposit boxes in the sky' to rich investors. We are sold these proposals on the basis of providing homes for those in need - but actually these schemes deliberately avoid providing housing for the people who really need homes.

Most residents are not even aware of what the Council is planning and even those who are aware face an uphill struggle being able to comment given the volume of documents about the proposals, the lack of clarity in those documents and the fact that the Council doesn't post them in a form that allows objectors to easily respond to specific parts.

Our Tottenham have put together a formal complaint about the Local Plan documents consultation process which calls for the consultation to be halted and re-scheduled. It would be good if residents can send messages to ldf@haringey.gov.uk to support Our Tottenham's call for genuine consultation.

Oh yes, and don't expect much by way of challenge from the local MP to the trashing of Tottenham.   David Lammy is receiving financial backing in his mayoral bid from the Head of European Investments for Cain Hoy, a private investment company which is part of a joint venture to develop £1 billion of residential units in regeneration areas!
