Well done for looking after it. If it turns out no-one recognises the cat on here - then you could take it to a vet and get it scanned to see if it is microchipped - they won't charge you and no appointment is needed. They will also tell you if it's neutered.
If the cat is not microchipped, then you could put the cat's details in the found pets on www.animalsearchuk.co.uk
Also the same website lists details of lost cats.
You could try attaching a note to the collar with your tel no and see if any owner calls you.
You could put up some flyers and ask your neighbours if they recognise it and those with gardens backing on to yours.
If you have a microwave, a Snugglesafe heat pad will keep a cat warm for hours.
Hopefully the cat will have an owner who has maybe been away over christmas - I always encourage cat owners to get their cat neutered and microchipped and have a catflap.

No collar on him. I'll see if he comes back over the next few days and take him to a vet to see if he's chipped. Although my cat is being a bit mean to him/her and chasing him off. It's still coming back and sitting at my back door and letting me stroke it. It's been here all afternoon now bless him.

Sounds like a good plan. The number of cats which go missing every day always increases in the holiday seasons and fireworks month. Hopefully someone will recognise it. You could try putting on a temporary makeshift collar with note attached. It's cold for a cat if it is stuck outside. One of my cats is obsessed by food, but he doesn't go through bins looking for food. My vet is open if you need the details. Happy New Year.

I will try and get a collar on it tomorrow with my number on or take it to the vet. It's out there now and I can hear my cat being horrible to it and chasing it off. One second they're sat there fine then mine will meaow horribly at it. Don't know what to do really, I'd bring it in but mines not gonna like it.

You know what's best for your cat, but if I were you, I would bring your own cat inside at night anyway. I deal a lot with lost cats. Cats are more likely to get lost or fight or get injured by a car at night. As you know, your cat is just defending its territory right now and reacting to a strange scent of the found cat, it doesn't mean they wouldn't get on if introductions were done in a certain way (which I can tell you about if you wanted to know).
At this point, if you bring the found cat inside at night, you would need to keep him in a separate room from your cat.

Can't seem to work out how to add you. Anyway I've been out to look with food and can't see him even hough I'd heard them not long before. I've closed the cat flap now and dug out my litter tray so mine shouldn't be able to get outdoors. If I see him again tomorrow I'll attempt to lure him in whilst I keep mine in another room.... might be hard with a 1 and 3 year old but ill give it a go. Then I might need tips on introducing them for the time being until I can get to the vets.
