Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Apologies for this boring post but your advice would be much appreciated.

Ever since we had a new boiler installed about 3 years ago we have had constant problems getting the radiators in our bedroom to work properly. The room is situated on the first level at the front of the house. The boiler we bought has the capacity (so we understand) to pump up to the loft, if we ever extended up there, so we are at a loss as to why it won't heat these two radiators.

British Gas have been out umpteen times and whilst they fix it for a few days, they soon stop working. We have now been told that the pipes are probably kinked somewhere which is stopping the flow of water. This means potentially having to take up the carpet and floorboards in the bedroom (and possibly further back in the house) to try and solve the problem.

If we whack the thermostat up to 30 degrees these radiators get burning hot but of course that makes the rest of the house unbearably hot (in addition to being costly and environmentally unfriendly). Something that puzzles us is, if there is a blockage, why does turning up the thermostat help, presumably this does not increase the pressure (or does it)?

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone recommend a heating engineer who can solve this problem once and for all? With winter fast approaching it is depressing not to be able to heat this room properly.

Hi Karen.

We, and friends, use Rob Murray.

RJM Plumbing & Heating - 07803 014181

A good guy, very knowledgable and highly recommended.

I think I got his number from this site way back when!

Good luck,

Matt
Hello,
Although i haven't had this problem I have had problems with British Gas enginees coming, fixing the problem and then having to corm back more than 5 times to "fix the problem" which was re occurring. I honestly would not rate them as good at all.
I finally found an amazing gas engineer locally David Rutter who has been amazing at fixing things and installing a new boiler that to date (touch wood) I have had no problems with for the past 6 years! He is very busy but. He is defo worh getting out to get a second opinion as I did and he fixes the issue I had no problem. His number is 07956 829232 he is homers and professional and won't rip you off. Good luck
Emma
I'd guess (and it is an unqualified guess) that in whacking it up to 30, what you are actually achieving is having the heating on for a long time. And time is what you need if there is indeed a kink slowing the flow of water upstairs.
Its possibly worth testing having the downstairs radiators individually set to off, putting the thermostat on a reasonable number and seeing if , with enough time, the upstairs rads heat up (with no downstairs heat being generated, the thermostat will hopefully not detect it's getting warmer upstairs).

I assume you have bled the upstairs radiators ?

Hi Karen,

I worry about using British Gas , I don't know how qualified their employers are , probably not that experienced. If you think about it , a central heating expert of good repute would have his own business, as they can make tremendous money.I know someone local to called George who is excellent but only recommends Valiants boilers. If this problem has been since you had it installed it might not have been set up correctly.

Karen, the more Tech approach would be to use one of these companies that help you find leaks under floorboards.  They use thermal cameras so will follow the flow of water through the pipes without having to lift carpets or anything until they find the problem.

I have not used any so I cannot give you a personal recommendation,  but a search in google came up with dozens.

Thank you to everyone for there advice and recommendations. Will definitely be following them up. It seems to be one to add to our ever increasing list of things we need to do to maintain our house, thought two leaks seem to be leading at the moment! Oh the joy of these great Victorian homes!
I can't recommend Nadeem from Alinsons highly enough. We had a gas leak in our kitchen and he came round late in the evening to save the day at an hour's notice. Lovely guy. 07812 010785
