Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Oonagh and Paul are badged guides trained at the University of Westminster.

They have both lived in Crouch End for many years and know the area well. They are organising a series of guided walks drawing on a number of local sources including research from the Hornsey Historical Society.

The first of these is Crouch End in the First World War: The Home Front.

It’s going to cover life here while the fathers, husbands and sons were away at the Front.

How did they cope with the food shortages?
How did the women rise to the challenge?
Where were the local German shops?
Did a bomb fall in your street?
Did a Conscientious Objector live on your street?
Where did the hospital stand that dealt with casualties from the trenches?
How many people died when the 41 bus ran over waiting passengers?

The dates we’ll be walking are:
Sunday 8 June
Saturday 21 June
Sunday 20 July
Saturday 9 August
Sunday 10 August

We’ll meet up at 2pm at the corner of Middle Lane and Hornsey High Street just inside Priory Park. The walk lasts about 90 minutes and we finish at the Earl Haig Memorial Hall, Elder Avenue N8 where we’ll be entertained to a WW1 themed tea.

The cost of the walk is £7 and the cost of the tea is £3. If you would like to join us for either, please let us know by contacting us here or you can phone on 07539399549.
