Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

HI everyone I been having a massive  problem with my neighbour regarding the wheelie bins,

we move to this house couple of years ago and our top neighbour was already living there, we realise that they  are not great fan of recycling and since the local authority / Veolia made this decision of collection once every 15 days it's been just a nightmare.

I will explain, my neighbour can fill both bins in one week so as a result they're left open over a week and with the hot days the small it's just horrendous, now there is  maggots all over the bins, to help I did tried to explain them  but they English is not good so I think they didn't get it at all. I was thinking with the time they will get there but sadly I was wrong it's even worst this days.

I did try contact Veolia but looks like they are not responsible for that moreover a spoke with the guys on the collection and ask if is possible to send a new ones or at least disinfect the bins, but the show no interest. one day I very nice gentleman rang my bell with the leaflet explain all the procedures for recycling  and I was excited about it, but my neighbour did not turn up so I left then on his door, he just ignored everything.

now the situation is getting worst and worst as is maggots everywhere as well as strong smell and I can't even  open a window on this hot days, on my everyday life I have to hold my breath to get home . It's a very stressful situation as I don't want to create problems with neighbours but in the other hand I don't want to let him doing the same over and over. I just don't know where should I call for help any suggestions will be much appreciate.

thank you for reading this .

Hi again after such a enforcement of my part trying create a better environment and  it came out as a really disappointed experience .

I'm really frustrated with this hole situation and now I did realize its not only me, but most of the houses are having the same issue with the bins.

Please see the pictures and if you have any suggestions let me know. I already send an email to my local councillor and I am waiting for his response but in the mean time I'm felling really down on this without know what to do anymore.

 Thank you.

Hi Kust, on 11 June, Liz advised you to contact the Harringay councillors as she thought you lived on the Ladder. (On the same day, Emine Ibrahim and James Ryan both offered to help.)

You then explained that you live in Bruce Grove ward, so later on 11 June I suggested you contact Stuart McNamara.  I gave his email address and phone number. Stuart is not only one of your ward councillors but he's the "cabinet" councillor whose responsibilities include waste.

I realise Stuart is probably under enormous pressures. So if he hasn't yet had time to get back to you, can I recommend you copy in the other two Bruce Grove councillors Joe Ejiofor and Felicia Opoku. Especially as you are seeing the same unpleasant problem with other homes where you live.

joseph.ejiofor@haringey.gov.uk

They are both open, approachable and helpful people.

I will be interested to hear if you are successful as I am having exactly the same problem. In my case the tenants resposnible are Hungarian and very nice and one speaks good English but I just can't seem to persuade them that the black bin is not for food! Maybe there is a differenct recycling colour scheme in Budapest? I asked Veolia if there are leaflets in other languages and they said only English, which seems contrary to the council's usual policy, especially when the recycling rules are somewhat complicating and confusing even to someone whose first language is Englsih. Anyway best of luck! You have certainly drawn attention to a probably commoner problem than is realized. Many in Haringey are trying their best with recycling and it's a pity that these efforts are being undermined, perhaps by confusion and/or language issues.
