Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is really gross...we have an old extractor fan in our very high ceilinged bathroom which has never worked and has started to leak something crystally - looks like a fungus type of thing - am really disturbed by this and worried it may be poisonous

Who can I call to sort it out pronto?

Hi

Always a bit difficult without having a look but I would suggest you ensure that the fan is isolated electrically and then consider it's immediate removal ensuring suitable gloves, clothing etc are worn. This could probably be done by anyone with competent DIY skills. From there an assessment can be made as to whether the unit (fan) is the cause of the leak, which sounds unlikely unless it's condensation, or whether its just where the water/liquid is escaping. It could be a leak onto the fan is causing a chemical reaction. I  hope this makes some sense but it doesn't sound like a problem that can't be fixed reasonably easily! I hope this helps.

Thanks Steve :)

Your welcome Sarah. I hope you've sorted the problem as you were understandably concerned. I don't want to blind you with science but Tris was right to correct Philip on the potential problems with the way some 'cowboys' ply their 'trade'. I expect Philip was assuming things had been wired in as per the regulations. Any competent person would always use a testing devise even after pulling a fuse or knocking a breaker!

Having said all this if things aren't yet sorted pm me and I would be happy to  bring my meter and have a quick look and if possible make safe.  You could then make a decision whether to replace the fan and bring in an electrician with up to date qualifications. Oh I am not looking to be paid for this and would refuse any such offer.

Following on from Steve's good advice, you should look for a white fused box in the landing say, usually just above the skirting which will contain a 3amp fuse. Remove this and you should be able to remove the fan safely. If in doubt, just switch off the main supply at the consumer unit(fuse box) Many fans can be replaced like for like but if you don't want to just put back the old vent.

Thanks Philip :)

I have sent you a message about this.

will get back to you thanks lauren!

thank you Tris. Will search for Ed's number!

My understanding is that at least in theory, anyone carrying out new works needs to be registered with the local authority, but not sure this happens really. I do believe that any NEW electrical works fall into this category, but replacing like for like does not.
