Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Tottenham Green Market
On Saturday 28 June, I'm launching Tottenham Green Market, on Tottenham Green, the green space near the Town Hall in N15.
It's for six Saturdays initially, and depending on the response it will probably be a year round market after.
People I've spoken to about this have been very excited about the market and it would be nice to see people in and around Tottenham join us for this.
There is a huge amount of talent in Tottenham, and through the market they will now have a place to sell their products to locals too. Think of Wildes Cheese (who makes his cheese in Tottenham and is very popular) and Flourish Bakery (who supply hotels and restaurants with their great bread and pastries), plus Beavertown Brewery, who have just moved to a space in Tottenham Hale.
There will be stalls selling local, seasonal produce, cakes, coffee, pickles, jams and chutneys, street food
and more!
The opening hours are 10am till 3pm, and there will be live music and a bar too.

No way!!!! What planet are they on - you'd rather have it unused than open it 4 Sundays a month (and draw more attention to the shops there). Hilarious.

How about Harris primary playground - they've had jumble sale boot fairs in the past. Or the area outside the entrance to Downhills Park now that its been expanded?

Jessica - I'm still puzzled (as I have been, though less so, about Harringay Market on both its venues).
Aren't we discussing a private business, which its initiator / proprietor / owner hopes will grow and branch out, yet located on public green space lacking overheads (literally!) but subsidised by the Borough Council to which I've been paying rates / poll tax / community charge / council tax for more than thirty years?
Isn't it right and fair that Alan (who knows more about Tottenham and about Haringey Council's inspired initiatives than most of the rest of us added together) should ask questions and expect response from the person most closely involved?
And is it any wonder that Alan and others should raise an eyebrow or three when you exude something of a patronising air about what Tottenham has lacked before your market's Council-sponsored arrival?

It's going to be a great market where a lot of locals from Tottenham will come along and support it like they do with the Ploughman events Cheryl organises. You can see the excitement on Twitter and the support locals have offered to help spread the word.
It'll be a nice way to get different pockets of the community together regularly on a Saturday albeit if it's only for six weeks.
I and I'm sure others will appreciate the time and effort it takes to organise and put on an event like this and most importantly to ensure it's successful.
SAVE THE DATE! Saturday 28th June - get there early!

I loved the other market, but it was slightly too far away - so this is brilliant. And we're grateful.

Jessica, please accept my thanks for explaining your role in this experiment. I entirely accept that you don't represent the Council nor do you need to answer questions about its policies.
If someone in the Council has told you that Tottenham Green is being turned into: "a market destination, a place for other events and festivals", then I hope and trust you will smile and quietly ignore this nonsense.
Over the years many thousands of people have strolled, sat, lingered, paused to look, or simply criss-crossed Tottenham Green. My photos show it's first and foremost a green. One which has on occasions been used as a small market; for meeting; for music; for political gathering. But also for many less positive uses. Your venture will be bringing new people.
I'm sure you realise that - like Escher woodcuts - different people see it differently. But a successful city park or green open space cannot be just one thing. It requires a varied balance and blend of users and uses. Get the balance wrong and there's a vicious circle which probably leads to green space being unused, or seen as threatening and shunned. And sometimes it's lost completely.
But get the balance right and there's a virtuous circle where it is enjoyed, defended and cherished.

I'm a Tottenham resident and I for one am glad to see this new market.
I pay council tax the same as the majority, and if a small portion of my council tax is being spent on this, then I'm glad as it would seem to be going towards something that is going to benefit the local commmunity.Personally I hope the new market comes to represent the diversity of the area, I would like to see caribean, african, polish, south american and lots of other cuisines represented if possible in addition to all the other great producers thhat regularly attend these events. I realise all these cuisines are all available in one shape or another in the local area already, but hopefully the new market can encourage a wider audience to embrace the diversity of Tottenham by bringing all these together!
Hope the 6 week trial works out and this becomes a permanent fixture of the local area, good luck with the market!

I went today to the market and I really enjoyed it. Very nice project!
