Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been thinking about this for a while and wondering how to broach the subject but I saw that it is on the increase and I think it needs tackling. Has anyone else noticed the increase in the amount of restaurants with the pastry rolling ladies in battery-hen conditions as their window display? What do you think? Am I the really the only person who seems to notice these poor women (it's always women) glumly sitting on little tiny stools or the floor in cramped window pens unable to get comfortable, move about freely or stretch their legs? Let's not get started on the hygiene issues and lack of sanitation in these pens! I think it is horrible and I've noticed some of them wincing with leg and back pain as I walk by. If you were made to sit like that in your office you'd ring HR and something would be done about it due to the risk of RSI, injury or DVT, and if it wasn't you'd take it further. Unfortunately, these women don't have that option because it is their menfolk who run the businesses. I have raised the issue with the council but haven't heard anything yet. Why is this happening in broad daylight in our community in this day and age and it seems nobody has even noticed it? I would be intetrested to hear thoughts.

I was thinking about how hot they must get. It can't be a nice job.
I've been thinking about this too, there's obviously an increase in these sightings. I'm not sure why they have these women sitting in the windows...perhaps to 'prove' that the pastries are fresh? It's a real a concern. Turkish pastry making is very hard work. I wonder if they are even paid?

I dread to think what the pay norm is in some local restaurants.  I know 2 people who worked 33 hours in 3 days, ie 3 x 11-hour shifts on consecutive days, with no more than a 15 minute break for a quick bite to eat per shift plus the odd cigarette break.  After the 3rd day they came home with £110 and never went back.  They had the impression that other staff at the same venue were working under similar conditions.  If someone from Haringey Council wants to know the specifics of the restaurant I'd be happy to tell them.

Yep, I reported the barbers shops with the "female assistant" (cleaner) wanted signs but nothing has been done.

It's not a matter of being a busybody, it's about standing up against this kind of treatment of (mainly) women, and not allowing it to become a normal part of our society! If this is what's going on in the windows, imagine what's happening behind closed doors. It has no place on the streets of Harringay in 2014 and we shouldn't be tolerating it.
Exactly, Lauren.

Lauren, I will make some enquiries of the council to see if there are any rules and regulations to this specifically.  I have to say that the ladies often look very uncomfortable and it does seem to be on the increase on Green Lanes.  I will let you know what I find out.
