Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My cat has been killed. Middle of Lausanne Road.

Dear Cat owners,

I just want to warn you if you have a cat that goes out the front of your house. My beautiful 9 yr old white fluffy cat was killed by a dog in my front garden on Monday afternoon. My neighbours told me the dog was owned by a young black man, and a girl was with him, the dog must have been off the lead and cornered my cat . I  dont know what kind of dog it was, but a passer by reported it to the police, and i have an incident no. 

Im devastated by this as he was a treasured pet. if you walk up lausanne road you may have seen him sitting on the window sil waiting for me to come home. 

Im looking into this as I dont see why the owner should get away with this, as the dog  must of been off the lead. 

Please be aware if your cats go out the front, and bear in mind this was the around 2.30 in the afternoon.

Thank you for all your replies, I have since found out more about the owner apparently he has a young baby , with a dog  like that it's a real danger to that child. 

I would have done anything to turn back time to have prevented this ,it has effected so many people who loved him he was an amazing character. So many people are crying over my lovely boy ,I'm heartbroken .

I don't want to lIve round here anymore.

Dear A, 

I am so sorry for your loss. I do feel for you. My own cat was killed last year by two dogs right in front of me. I tried to report it to the police but they refused to take my complaint. I have done quite a lot of research on this and it would appear to be a crime under the Dogs Act 1871 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and Metropolitican Police Act.  Here is a link to a copy of the guidance for police:

It specifically says:

"Metropolitan Police Act 1839 and Town Police Clauses Act 1847

These provide for offences for anyone to allow an unmuzzled ferocious dog to be at large,
(i.e. not under proper control in a public place) and attack, worry, or put in fear any person, horse
or other animal in any thoroughfare or public place in the metropolitan police district", or any
street in a town"

Not sure what anyone else thinks but reading this it looks to me like the police can take action and I don't understand why they don't.  Perhaps they are too overwhelmed with other crimes?  

Haringay Council (although incredibly sympathetic) don't have a dog warden even though it is listed on their website and they said it was a police matter.  The RSPCA also tried to get the police to take action but again they refused - although I think they did speak to the owner of the dogs. 

The only other recourse you have is to go to a solicitor (£50 - £100) to send a letter to ask the owner for compensation for emotional distress. They may have insurance? or the small claims court? I know this wont bring back your beloved cat but it may help to make the owner act more responsibility. You could also ask Haringey Council to put up signs on your road for dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead and perhaps to do some patrols to speak to dog owners who are not complying. They very kindly did this almost straightaway for me.

I too kept going over in my head trying to work out what I could have done to prevent what happened. It's part of the greiving process and I just feel for you so much.

I did contact the police and rspca could only do anything if the owner was heard telling the dog to attack the cat. I thought as the dog had come into my garden ,private property I could do something,but no.

Rspca say if dog has done this more than once they could step in and talk to him! 

Horrible dog out of control and off the lead but I can do nothing ...it's so depressing 

When you cat was killed was it in your garden ? It must have been so awful you poor thing

But don't think dogs are allowed off the leash in Haringey. Have you by any chance contacted the council?

OMG- thats awful, my heart goes out to you, I cant imagine, how terrible, and your cat looks totally adorable

i do worry bout my cats and dogs as they love jumping out the front window and living on the passage way, plenty of dogs of course- will try to stop behaviour

Please be careful if it's the haringey passage between lausanne rd,and hamdon as this is where the dog and owner went after he killed my cat .
