Scheme to save pub reaches 'critical' stage

Community pub dream: The Antwerp Arms

Community pub dream: The Antwerp Arms

WITH less than a month to go, the organisers of the scheme to buy a boozer and turn it into Tottenham's first community pub, are appealing for more backers.

People have until Friday, May 23, to buy shares in the Antwerp Arms and raise the £250,000 needed to save the Church Road watering hole.

If not, the boozer looks likely to be turned over to housing by a private developer which bought the site from pub company Enterprise Inns in October.

Community group the Antwerp Arms Association managed to get the pub, which is close to Tottenham Hotspur's White Hart Lane football stadium and Bruce Castle Park, to be listed as an asset of community value in September.

That has held up any planned work, and instead the group was given the option of buying the site and saving the pub.

While an impressive £32,370 has already been pledged, that is still almost £220,000 short of the required target, with just 29 days to go until D-day.

Chris Lane, who is one of the driving forces behind the scheme to save the pub, urged people to pledge money, and said: “This is a critical time for raising funds”.

Shares cost £50 each with a maximum investment of £20,000 per person. And membership of the scheme will bring a myriad of benefits, depending on how many shares individuals hold.

To find out more and to pledge money visit http://www.microgenius.org.uk/project/antwerp-arms-association-18, pop into one of the regular Monday meetings at the pub, which are held at 6.30pm, or write to Antwerp Arms Association Ltd, 87 Birkbeck Road, N17 8NH.

Is this building listed? You could go to the Heritage Lottery - as its location is fundamental to the area. I will be honest  - I have been to the pub on and off for years but found the drinks offers limiting. A lot could be done to attract the right crown and you would need the right manager if your right to buy is successful - Ill come to one of your meetings - Why not have a mass campaign to go out to all the local businesses to invest?

Thank you for your support, we have had a team of volunteers working tirelessly on this project for nearly a year and all your suggestions have been addressed, we agree that the pub has enormous potential and if run as a people powered pub by the community for the community it will be a fantastic and vibrant local venue. Even though many of  the local businesses are on board including the full support of our MP David Lammy, we now need people to pledge to buy shares on -

As one of our supporters said now is the time to rally the troops, so please tell all your friends and family about us, follow us on Facebook and twitter too!

See you soon!

We will be filming a promotional film at the Antwerp arms pub on Sunday 4th May at the Antwerp Arms Pub, Church street. N17 8AS, Meeting outside the pub at 2.00.pm, come along and take part!
It is with great delight we announce the fabulous New Tottenham Singers have agreed to providing the soundtrack of (and some even star in, our film-to-be) to promote the buying of shares in our community pub, (You can pledge your support on Microgenius.)

On Tuesday evening rehearsals began on 'Who is Annie?' (pics below) A slight liberty taking variation on Shakespeare's words and Schubert's melody 'Who is Sylvia?' (1826) selected by Nadya Ostroff, our resident musicologist. The song became a popular drinking song and is almost as old as our dear pub. It took no time at all for Choir Master,Tom Folkes to teach the amazing choir the song in four parts no less, and sound heavenly. A well as promoting AAA community sale of shares, you never know 'Who is Annie' may become a hit in 2014!

We are running out of time!

We've pledged money to this, even though it's about 2 miles from where we live. Tottenham needs more good local pubs, with a free hand to stock what they like and host local groups and community events as they see fit. No having to speak with the head office, before they can even so much as change the music being played.

But I'm starting to think that the majority of the local community around it actually don't want to keep it as a pub at all, and would rather see it converted into more small flats. That's a shame.

Thank you so much for your support James, we are still working hard on this project and hopefully we will pull it off in the end!
