If I were you, I would go to the vet. I would suggest getting some telephone advice from the vets first (for free!) and they will confirm if you need to bring him in. I use Village Vet in Winchmore Hill. They are open today until 4 and Sun 9 till 1pm. Plus they have a 24 hour hospital in Hampstead (and other branches, such as Highbury). Their tel is 0208 360 2020

Thank you very much for your replies and advice.
I didn't have a chance to read your responses earlier - although I did see the advice was "take him to a vet" We took him to Medivet in Hendon. What we did was take him to Medivet in Hendon. It is open 24/7 and has a hospital attached. The vet found his temperature was 40.6 and he's being kept in overnight for hydration and anti-inflammatories. We hope the temperature will be down by tomorrow as the potential cost explained to us by the vet is pretty frightening!
Go to the vet. Cats are experts at hiding pain. Have you checked the cat over to make sure thee are no injuries?
And cats purr when they're in pain, worth noting. It's self soothing, so don't let purring trick you in to thinking all is well. Good luck.
We took the dog to village vet on a week end a few weeks back, and they were great, btw. I use Hills in crouch End who are lovely.
