Well, I like the quality of the windows we ended up with, but not the fact that it took about 6 months rather than 8 weeks to get them. Kinda blew our schedule out of the water.

I've written up a 'lessons learned' section -- hope it's useful ...

We had beautiful pvc sash windows installed by www.barnetwindowcompany.co.uk

They're a family business and they did an excellent job. The windows look like wooden sash windows - even the council surveyor thought they were wood! Great insulation - no sound or wind. Important to use a good company with good quality windows and professional fitters. There are some terrible examples of badly designed pvc windows around.

I can't give an opinion about sashes (we just went for regular frames), but I was very pleased with the service from Ames Glass on Lordship Lane http://www.amesglass.com/   I was dreading the day I would need to invite a double glazing salesman into the house, but I was thoroughly impressed by Ames. The surveyor was incredibly knowledgeable and talked me through the options without ever sucking teeth or trying to sell me something I didn't want. I felt like I knew a lot more about what I wanted by the time he'd explained the options. 

Fitting was booked in a few weeks later, and all went to plan. I felt my choice to give the trade to a local company was vindicated.

Just had a very neat and reasonably priced  job done on our front (uPVC sash) and bathroom (uPVC casement windows) by Lordship Windows (http://www.lordshipwindows.com/), a well established (fd. 1977) local company with its workshop on Lordship Lane. They provided the most competitive quote and it took under eight weeks from estimate to completion. Just as promised the seven windows were installed with minimum fuss in two and a half days . We went for the uPVC for energy efficiency and low maintenance. Wood sash would have cost more than twice as much (we were quoted upwards of £10k), are never as energy efficient and, of course, need more maintenance. Besides the uPVC version is now more sympathetically designed and you are therefore paying over the odds for the marginal cosmetic difference.

I'm sorry, there is more than a "marginal cosmetic difference" between uPVC and timber sashes. If you can afford the latter, I would always go for timber despite the extra maintenance.

I highly recommend Hamid of Parsa Joinery for timber sashes.

A good experience recently with upvc double glazed windows from Nick Goldie at Sola Windows. They stock many types, including tilt and turn ones. Easy to deal with, reasonable, good fitting, supplied with vents and childlocks, good fitters...
