Great news!

On 11 August the Independent (i.e. the national newspaper not the local freesheet) had news here that 100 pubs had been given this status. But it's a 'say', not a veto. In effect, a six months pause for local people to prepare a bid - not a permanent solution.

Any members of HoL been involved in running a pub, who'd care to comment?

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

There is a pub in Nunhead called The Ivy House that has only just opened under it's new status as a community run establishment. They say;
London's first co-operatively owned pub, the first pub to be listed as an Asset of Community Value and the first building in the UK to be bought for the community under the provisions of the Localism Act.

Yes thanks Matt the Ivy House have supported the group and given us information.  The Antwerp Arms is now the first pub in north London to be listed as an asset of community value, and it makes us 'historic' in that respect too.

Excellent, well done to you all PAM. You have a great location on your side with the park opposite (and little chance of a retail establishment wanting to locate there, although I guess a housing developer is the only threat?).

The community is going to try and buy the pub too.........So still a battle ahead!

Given the lack of decent pubs in Tottenham, I’d have thought that any pub that offered good beer in nice surroundings would do pretty well as there’s not an awful lot of competition, and there’s a fair bit of demand from people who live in the area, but currently travel outside for a pint. I know loads of people who travel into Tottenham for the football, but don’t drink or eat in N17 or N15 as the pubs aren’t great and tend to get mobbed. The money a well-run pub would make on 20-25 match days a year would go a long way to subsidising quieter midweek nights.  I really hope this happens for the area.

good luck to all involved in this - just to check, is the pub still currently open? I would very much like to pop in for a drink some time.  If this place were to sell a couple of good real ales, I would be there a lot.

Yes the pub is still open

And for people who haven't been there, try to make time as well for a walk across the adjoining Bruce Castle Park;  if possible adding a short stroll round All Hallows Church next to Tottenham cemetery; and taking a look inside Bruce Castle Museum.
