Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Did people see news reports about Kevin Spacey's MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh Festival?  Anyone prompted to new ideas or rethinking old ones?  The full text is here.

I've read and re-read it mulling over possible implications. And not only for the arts - especially theatre, film, radio and TV.  It seems to have ideas and pointers for the whole range of news, opinion, documentaries, and other "content" now beginning to grow and blossom in different media online.

I just hope this speech is received by the gatekeepers of old media with the same enthusiasm with which it is given. The outdated distribution models, meaningless format categorisation, and corporate conservatism is literally holding culture back.

But then that's true of much of our society that actually thinks bleating about tradition is anything other than a shameful fear of change.

The old media is already dead in the water and bleeding money left right and centre and the new digital age is already here. Who cares if sky tv , virgin or even the BBC keep up. The media is now being mediated by us through Facebook, blogs and forums and the front room telly is already linked to you tube, BBC Iplayer and US Netflix with out paying a license fee and all perfectly legally. The worlds music is available as and when on spotify and a number of apps have reorganised our experience of the real world to huge degree. Even the old money system itself is getting turned in its head with bit coin and even the black market has become digitised with eBay style feedback ratings and secure and private method of payment which rightly or wrongly, are making a total ass of the war against drugs.

That's before you even consider peer to peer technology and the development of the 3d printer and the possibility to pirate any inanimate object, including things made of metal.

There are no gatekeepers now, the gates got burned down a long time ago.
