I was in court this afternoon. Cllr Canver has been given unconditional bail to appear at Wood Green Crown Court on August 28. No plea was entered.

She remains a serving councillor, but has been suspended from the Labour group, which means she cannot serve as a cabinet member. It is national Labour policy that for an allegation as serious as this, members are suspended.

What has she been accused of then? How has she (allegedly) perverted the course of justice?

Believe it or not the indictment, which contains the specifics of the charges, were not read out in court today. We are pretty sure we know what they are, though.

I need to check what I can and should say, Paul.
It's rather as I thought. Unless I get advice to the contrary, my position remains as it was yesterday aftternoon, and that is that it's not appropriate to publish what happened until the indictment is made public.
Seems odd to be formally charged in a court of law without the actual charge being made? Either it's public knowledge or it isn't? If it isn't public knowledge then it seems odd that you know all about it....

Excellent point Paul. If Hugh knows then it's out in the public domain and should be published here and elsewhere.

Sorry guys, but because Stephen and I may have ben told something from people we know, doesn't mean that the knowledge is in the public domain. Stories being unpublished for one reason or another is hardly unusual. In this case the reason is mainly caution.

I had expected that all the details would be made public today. The fact that they haven't leaves me very cautious about breaking rules of which I'm uncertain.

Fair enough - you wouldn't want to end up with egg on your face, literally (well almost) for Ed Miliband today.

Strikes me as a little odd that whilst there is caution being expressed by you, the CPS is confident enough in their facts to bring a formal charge.

All very intriguing and dramatic.

I shall be patient...

according to the London Turkish Gazette, Cllr Richard Wilson says "the alleged offence is very serious". But I guess we will have to wait and see.

And he would wouldn't he, being the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. Maybe Mr Wilson is your near neighbour, if only politically.
