Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The 20 mile an hour limit in Islington is horrible - I would hate it in Haringey.

I ride a scooter and I was taken by surprise by the change to the limit riding through Islington a few months ago. On then travelling at the 'proper' speed I was nearly knocked off my scooter by an aggressive taxi driver who illegally overtook me twice on a single lane road while driving at (or probably above) the old limit. In trying to explain politely at the next set of lights that I wasn't trying to hold him up, that I was driving at 20 as it was the speed limit... he yelled at me.

I went and researched the change in limit after this unpleasant exchange and found that the council put through the 20mph limit but the police don't support it and will not enforce it. So I have the choice of following the speed limit and being out of sync with traffic and so being knocked off by other drivers who don't follow it and won't be stopped by police for their speed.. or I can stick to the old speed limit and stay safe and face no sanctions...

(You don't have to believe me but I am a very careful rider and have also been a cyclist so I do watch out for cyclists and mad pedestrians at all times - and some really do have a death wish, speed limit or no)

I think the comments aren't necessarily pro-driving, just anti-20mph speed limit.

However I do agree with you on people who text while driving. Happy to join the lynch mob for them any time.

Why single out car drivers? Van and lorry drivers do it all the time, as do cyclists. And bus drivers frequently exceed 30mph on Priory Road.

Delete "car" and I agree with FPR all the way

Texting while cycling? That's impressive.

I HAVE seen it. But more often phoning

And there are some dangerously lunatic pedestrian OAPs up our part of Wightman. They don't call them zimmers for nothing.

I always try to get over 30mph on my push-bike going down hill on the Camden Road in an effort to set off the speed cameras. Never happened though, this either means they don't respond to bikes, there's no film in the camera, or more than likely I'm not fast enough.

...

...

Not while texting though of course :)

Good attempt, though you are lacking suitable metal mass to set them off. Find the mobile camera vans, these use a laser which can get you. :)

Speed limits only apply to powered vehicles. More here.

Probably still try to fine you.

If I managed to get a speeding ticket on a bike I'd hang it on the wall as an achievement!

"suitable metal mass"

As long as its metal and not me I'll be fine - bring on the cakes...

I'm a man for a challenge - I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a mobile camera van and report back :)
