Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just wondered if anyone knows what kind of work is going on at 41 Umfreville. There are two huge skips full of clay out front, which suggests someone is digging a basement.

Very sensible - best way to go.

....but not cheap!

Don't you need planning permission to dig down? I would have thought there were implications on this subsidence-prone clay soil.

Check with the Council's Planning department.  If they're excavating the basement they will also need the Council's Building Control department's approval, so contact them as well.

when I walked past I assumed it was a garden being landscaped.

Yes, that would be my guess too.....I saw lots of greenery coming out of there before.

Two big skips full of chunks of clay?

Well I just hope that whoever lives there doesn't happen to come across HOL for the first time this weekend and then find their very own address as a subject heading on the forum. I think I'd find that rather disconcerting.

And if I understand his posts correctly, I agree with Hugh: expanding homes downwards is a great, if expensive, use of city space.

I understand your concern, Graeme. But this particular property has been the subject of a previous prosecution for breach of planning law.(This information is in the public domain). There is a huge problem in this area with conversion of single family dwellings into HMOs, and I do think we need to keep an eye on things that are going on.

I concur Graeme.

It is not polite to publicly discuss the ongoings of a person or building's nether regions.

Also I know of someone's garden in Hampstead collapsing because of work on a next-door basement.
