Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been told that every child is entitled to 15 free hours of nursery provision from age 3. With this in mind, could anyone recommend a great local nursery school that I could put my child's name down for (just about to be 2) as I presume there are big waiting lists?

We've recently returned to the area and have no knowledge of schools/nurseries, or actually of how the school/nursery system works.

And if a child attends a nursery school attached to an infants/primary school, are they then more likely to be given a place in reception when the time comes?, or doesn't it work that way!

We live on Umfreville Road N4, bottom end of the ladder.

Many thanks

Eli

...Unless you're paying for a private place or additional hours there's no point putting your name down...The schools won't even give you an application form until your child is 2 1/2 or some have a specific date.

The schools themselves give the nursery places and the borough gives the school place. This is based solely on dictance and how many siblings there are in any given year so the catchment area changes each year. Your child might get a nursery place but not a school place. One has no baring on the other.

I applied for north harringay nursery, south harringay nursery and woodlands park (I live in the gardens.) I got a place at all three and decided I like woodlands park the most...it's a stand alone nursery school, everyone is an early years specialist, it has a lovey outside area and Fantastic resources.

Hournsey ridge playgroup which is based at north Harringay primary is also excellent, my son goes there now. I'm only changing because its too far for me.

I hope this helps!

Bethany, thanks so much, I really appreciate all the info and your recommendations

I can personally recommend South Harringay Nursery. You can apply when your child is 2 and a half; success (if I recall correctly) is based on special needs, siblings already at the school, distance from the nursery. No guarantee of getting a school place though; school places are assessed at the time of application by the various criteria. They have two sessions 9-12, and 1230 to 3:30, five days a week (but no real choice as to which session you will get and the clock-watching can get a bit monotonous to be sure you're there right on 12). The staff are lovely though and my child really enjoys all the indoor and outdoor activities. I think it's been great preparation (so far) for school.

I can also personally  recommend Little Jewels, a private nursery on Cavendish Road. They take children for the 15 hours. Not sure how early to apply. I know they have a waiting list for certain age groups. The manager, Vlora, is extremely helpful, so I'm sure she will give you the best info. I think they offer the 15 hours a bit more flexibly too so may be a better fit depending on your childcare needs.

I have friends with children at Orange (turnpike lane) and Eagle (corner Green Lanes and Allison Road), both private nurseries who also do the 15 hours. They are happy with the care their children get at those places. Again not sure on waiting lists but it would be worth asking so you know whether or not to start panicking.

Rebecca thanks so much, I will check them out

Eli
