Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello! With all the media discussion about the increase in people visiting food banks, I want to help. Does anyone know where the nearest food bank is and what rules, if any, there are for donating?

Thanks ever so!

Great minds - thanks for this. I had some stuff ready to post earlier in the week. Then I got distracted and forgot all about it till I saw something in C4 News last night.

The local foodbank I dug up is indeed very local. We have one on Wightman Road - more about it here.

I hope you don't mind, I've changed your post title a bit to try and better attract attention.

Aye, the Gospel Centre on Wightman Rd opposite the mosque have a sign in the window.

I've been trying to get hold of them to volunteer but they haven't replied to my email and I hate phoning people.  There's usually a list of items that they require; I think there's one on the Trussell Trust site that Hugh has linked to.

I've also tried to get hold of them to find out whether they need some help/donations but had no response.

But this article might explain why:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/may/27/food-banks-struggle-d...

"The food bank was evicted from its rent-free warehouse at short notice by a developer last November and has not found a suitable home. It still collects food donations but now distributes them from two small temporary outlets, a church and a local play centre. There is little storage, no room to talk to clients and no office space. The landline telephone number listed on its website no longer works. Its one full-time administrator has had to be laid off."

If anyone does manage to get hold of them and can confirm if they still want donations delivered to Wightman Road on Sundays, please let me know. It sounds like they have no storage now so not sure if they are going to want a large volume delivered - perhaps they'd prefer smaller, more regular donations?

I am sure they are still taking donations. They are talking to a few different groups to find a new space. I am sure that issue will be resolved soon enough.

If you ring them and leave a message they will phone you back. There is no airs and graces with this group. No office or call centre. They are a small group of committed people working hard to address poverty locally. I have referred several people to Susan the co-ordinator and they have been very helpful.

Con if you speak with them again, feel free to give Susan my number / email address and if there's a specific message she'd like to get out, I'll be happy to try and help.

Hi Hugh

I left a voice mail with Susan to tell her she is trending (i think this a good use of the word) on HOL. Hopefully  she will ring me back.

Con

Cheers, Con.

Thanks Elle - useful

There's a plan afoot to start up another distribution centre, on Sundays at Holy Trinity CE on Granville Rd N4; Susan chaired a meeting there last week. There's no formal start date yet. And apparently there will be a food collection drive at Tesco on Stroud Green Road on 5/6 July for which volunteers would be appreciated! I'll post any more info as I get it.

Info re Tesco collections on 5/6 July has just been released (Fareshare in partnership with the Trussell Trust) - sign up here to help. SGR Tesco isn't on the list, but others in N. London are.
