Recessed shelving?
Does anyone on this site have any shelving built into the wall between studs? I was trying to explain about it to a carpenter, but not sure he understood completely what I meant. My bathroom is very narrow, and I wanted to sink the shelving into the wall rather than have it sticking out: some friends did this in their kitchen years ago.
Any pictures would be welcome.

Don't you need to already have an existing recess of some sort to do this? Assuming you do, I don't imagine this would be a problem. I think it's called 'alcove shelving' - we've got it in our living room round a chimney breast and i'm pretty sure that was the term we used when it was installed!

No, I mean where you cut into the plasterboard of a stud wall and actually fit the shelves inside.

I'm sorry I don't have pictures but it's easy, I've done it many times (even under the stairs where ther is 'dead' space!

Ooh sounds interesting. I'll watch with interest in that case as it's something I'd consider in our bathroom which has plasterboard walls and not enough storage ;)

The carpenter was talking in terms of having to take the whole wall out and rebuild it around the shelves, but surely you can just cut into the wall where you want to put the shelves?

I'd have thought so, yes - that's what a quick google search seems to imply anyway.
I'm no expert, but it does seem possible! Maybe point your guy towards this simple tutorialwhich clearly states that you need to cut into an existing wall with a 'drywall saw' and make a hole no bigger than what you need?

Maddy, just the follow the video as linked; you DO NOT have to take out the wall! Bear in mind the following:
* There may be insulation inside the wall so by removing it, in the place where you fit the shelves, there may be more noise traveling between the 2 rooms.
* Before fitting the cabinet into the wall I recommend at least one coat of 'primer/undercoat' or varnish on back; even though it's hidden this will prevent any warping of the timber.

Maddy, everything is worth pr-empting however I don't think that a partition wall can possibly be load bearing & even if it was the studs (timber) would be unaffected. The shelves & contents would need to be very heavy to be a problem.
