Hi Harringgaters
Just a heads up. My neighbour John across the road got burgled yesterday. Second one in our road in three months - I know hardly makes it a crime hot spot but nevertheless upsetting.
The question is what makes the best deterrent?

I recon we will get an alarm system on the weekend

Is the crime prevention team part of the met police?
Also, I urge people to dial 101 to report anything suspicious.
We were broken in to a couple of years ago and advised to get an alarm as the best deterrent.
our next door but two was burgled yesterday (on Duckett Road). the police who came round advised us to not keep any garden tools in our garden, as apparently a lot of it is opportunistic. quite why someone would be wandering through other people's gardens looking to burgle but lacking the tools to do so, i don't know, but that was the expert advice.
There's another worrying 'tool' that burglars will use. Your washing that is drying on your clothes line in your (back) garden. They'll smash a window then use your own towels, sheets etc to 'pad' out the window frame covering the broken glass so that they don't cut themselves when they climb in. It happened to me. Also, at the same time, they used a broom handle to wedge the front door shut so that when we came home and tried the door we couldn't get in. This also allowed them a bit of extra time to escape.
PS, I live in a terraced property. These people were prowling through the back garden after gaining access some where else up the road.
So, don't leave anything out that could possibly be used as a tool, and it's surprising just what can be deemed to be a tool so be alert.
Yes indeed - I have a bleendin great Axe sitting outside my back door eek!
"There are not many window frames that can resist the leverage of a garden spade." A phrase that I recall every time I'm tempted not to lock up the tools at the end of a day's digging.
Being found with the 'tools of the trade' is bad news for the street-level thief, they can be pulled in and their home searched. So they improvise. No gloves in the summer but socks work fine. No crowbars but any old metal lever. etc. Look around your yard.
Alternatively, make sure your Head Office is in a tax haven. Much less risky.
Don't forget that garden implements also make formidable weapons.
Many years ago a burglar got into our house from the back but ran away when he heard someone; it was my sister who was alone in the house. The most frightening thing was that we later discovered that he had removed the chain and handle from the outside loo - no doubt to arm himself. Its a good job we hadn't left anything more lethal lying about. The sorts of kitchen knives sold now are also a worry for this reason.
