Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

It is great that the one-way system is in the process of being turned into a two-way system, but why start off by filling up a perfectly useful tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians?

Hi Anna, at a Haringey Cyclists meeting a number of months ago we discussed that it was no longer going to be the 'route' through due in part to crime in the tunnel..which I thought was a shame as enjoyed whizzing through a number of times!

The plans for the new road layout include a street level crossing for cyclists and pedestrians.

"... due in part to crime in the tunnel"?  Was any evidence presented to the Haringey cyclists meeting to support this explanation about crime in the subway under Monument Way?  For example, had cyclists been robbed or attacked? I'd appreciate hearing from a member of the group. (Its secretary perhaps?)

This frame from Google Earth shows the location.

If you click to enlarge it, you can see that the actual subway was quite short. On the other hand, there were problems: with lighting; and sometimes our Parks Service needed a nudge to deal with overgrown bushes.

Here's another view - the southern approach to the subway.

Apologies, hi Ana !

No worries :) I guess crime is easier to commit inside a tunnel than on the road (although, however I would have a few points ...

* better to send pedestrians on a 5 minute detour? which doesn't always happen and they choose to just cross that road instead

* how come cyclestreets, and other 'websites for cyclists' have not updated their information about that yet? i.e. who are supposed to inform the public about the dissappearance of a cycle route (or an important part of it - us cyclists?

* I didn't know about such cycling group, and it's great that it meets and is heard by the authorities that decide to eliminate cycle routes. However this was a pedestrian crossing as well.

end of rant :)

Rant away by all means if it's helpful ana_p.

I was completely unaware that the pedestrian and cycle crossing at street level had been dropped. This is bad news. When did you hear about this decision? I'd very much appreciate more information.

I only ever referred to pedestrian and cycle crossing as in, the tunnel. Short itself but part of cycle route 54 that now is cut with no signs as to where it continues South.

Sorry, Ana_p, I'm completely confused. You referred to a decision by the authorities to eliminate a cycle route.

My understanding was that there would be a new street level crossing. Have you and other cyclists information that this will not be happening?

We don't have a secretary at the moment-best to email Haringey@lcc.org.uk, our coordinator knows most about this scheme
