Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

No rubbish collection today , Nelson Road. Council web site says January 2nd. What's the excuse this time, I wonder? Flu? Vomiting bug?

Can Veolia be sacked? They're making Enterprise look good, and I am sick of seeing their stupid purple sacks everywhere all the time.

Anyone else not had their rubbish collected again?

I hate to buck the trend, but felt I had to put in a positive story just for balance. I had not bothered checking the dates of waste collection over christmas, and assumed that we would not get general waste collected until this week due to the two week rota. However I was pleased to see it was collected last week as well as recycling. We did have an issue as they failed to collect food waste, but when contacted, they arranged for this to be done the next day. Job well done -ish!

Good to hear some positive feedback too. Thanks for that.

...though also some indication of the sad state of affairs we've come to expect when even the positive feedback includes things like "they failed to collect food waste"

Straws must be firmly grasped at!

The hit-rate for collecting food waste has improved since I complained directly to the recycling manager in our area in person - but it really does seem patchy. It wouldn't bug me so much if the apparently disappointing uptake of this service wasn't then blamed on residents.

I wonder if it isn't chicken and egg. But whatever the sequence of cause and effect your comment is a useful pointer which needs careful thought - by both Veolia and Haringey staff monitoring the changeover.

As I can't be sure who reads comments on HoL, to make certain, can I please ask you to send a brief email to your three ward councillors - two of whom are key cabinet members. Also Cllr Nilgun Canver. (Who has waste among her cabinet responsibilities.)

To save you time, cut & paste:

Thanks

None of our general waste, almost the entire road, was collected (due) 5th Dec so I phoned Veolia and they sent out a team to do the whole road later that afternoon. I was pleased with that result and believed it was now all resolved. But two weeks later, the week before Christmas and they did it again. I now had the prospect of looking out over growing piles of rubbish for my Xmas view. So I phoned Veolia again. Nothing was done. By now we were almost in the holiday period with it's amended collections and extra xmas rubbish. This time I emailed via the Haringey website and got a job number and was advised that it would be done on the next working day. This I took to be Xmas Eve. Nothing. So the next collection day would be the Thursday after Xmas. Again nothing. Another phone call to Veolia and I got through to the chap I'd spoken to a month earlier, he seems to be a bit more thorough than others. But due to the amended dates he couldn't tell me when they would come and take the (by now) huge piles of bin bags that were growing outside mine and my neighbours houses. They actually turned up at 11.30am on the Sunday before the New Year.

This week was again the double collection and I must say that they took most of it this time, no need for me to phone them.

But they are going to have to work things out a bit better. Mine is a street of HMO's with a lot of transient tenants and very small front yards. Their reasons/excuses for failing to collect can sometimes be reasonable but the result is that if it's not collected it'll just sit there and grow. It has to be taken away at some time or another so why not when it is first placed out there and not left until a complaint is sent in.

Alan, I'm already in semi regular contact on a number of issues ;)

Good. But please keep hammering away if there are continuing problems so the "senior councillors" know without any doubts.

My own - publicly expressed view - is that the new waste arrangements were introduced too fast and too far across Haringey before there was enough time to learn from earlier phases. Though I can also see the opposite view. Get the new system established and sort out the problems as people get used to it.

Conventional wisdom used to be that politicians measured the strength of feeling on an issue by the number of letters on a topic in their "postbag". If many hundreds of people had taken the trouble to sit down and write, the pols knew it was serious. Now it needs to be individual letters and emails.

I'm also converted to the view that it's better to have councillors who live in or near wards they represent. Or at least in roughly the same part of Haringey.

Madeline's post above makes the point. She judges the Council's waste collection service by looking out of her window or walking along her own street. It's like the old saying: the wearer knows where the shoe pinches.

Unfortunately, there has a lot of confusion on the current collection dates. I've kept the council's booklet on refuse, which has the dates on when your refuse and recycling should be collected. However, this is for those who get theirs scheduled for Thursdays, so it may not of use for those of you who get theirs collected on different days.

We have been living in the Ladder since Dec 1st. We have not had our rubbish completely emptied a single time since we have moved in. They typically just empty a single bin of the three shared by our flats. Complaints to Veolia are not achieving anything. Do we have another escalation point? We now have a spare bedroom filling with rubbish with no where to go.

Welcome to the Ladder and I am sorry that your initial experiences with the council's waste collection service is poor.  You are probably aware that last year we changed from weekly to fortnightly collections for residual waste and it is still taking time to settle down and problems continue.  I am happy to take this up with the council and Veolia on your behalf if you want to let me have some more details - you can direct message me here or email me on karen.alexander.haringeylibdems@gmail.com
