Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

It was only around 2 months ago that we received a notice through the door regarding feeding vermin, however it is obvious that some neighbors do not take this into account. Some sort of feed has been left outside their property. I tried to look on the councils website but i cant find the right place to put such a complaint. Any ideas as it effects all of us, especially with the increase in rats that we have seen.

I know exactly what you are going through I have a neighbour who is oblivious to the effect s of their actions. The amount of rats has increased dramatically.

I'm not certain of the legal position. But I suggest a good place to start finding out what can be done is by contacting your local Neighbourhood Action Team at the Council.

There's information about these teams on the Council's website here. As you'll see, there's a team covering the two wards: Harringay and St Ann's. The contact details include an email address and phone number.

As this specific problem seems to be on the increase, can I also suggest you give HoL members a reportback on the advice/help you get.

You need to report this to pest control at the council. Rats are a public health hazard. In the meantime you should probably ensure that your home is sufficiently protected so that they can't just crawl in.
Good luck.

The "Pigeons on Duckett Road" thread last month provided this email address which had some effect - at least with leaflets - john.forde@haringey.gov.uk

Near the big supermarket, people come with bags of bread to feed a growing flock of pigeons, on their way to do their shopping.  The foxes ignore this bread as they prefer the takeaway chicken that gets thrown away.

It would be great to know what could be done about this.  I can't think of a thing.  Bossy notices would I think have no effect at all.

Can neighbours of Duckett  Road and Cavendish Road PLEASE DON'T feed the birds at the front of your house or in the back garden ,the  amount of RATS have increase so much they are causing everyone a possible health risk and are visible in both areas during the day and night. I am sure that I don't want rats in my house let alone in yours.

Jane, did you contact the Neighbourhood Action Team - my suggestion? Or the Council's Pest Control team as Mog5 suggested?

Several years ago I had some small successes after I saw rats in bushes on a green. The Pest Control officer also took a look at nearby front gardens and served notices on owners who clearly had rat holes visible from outside their properties. They will need some indication about those properties which appear to be causing problems.

It's also worth contacting your three ward councillors as they may already know about the problems and have taken action.

My next door neighbour does this (on Duckett Road). I have tried to explain to him why it's a bad idea, but he doesn't really speak English (or pretended not to) and keeps doing it. Perhaps the council could translate the letter into Polish?

The leaflets given out on our road do seem to have had some effect. They mentioned a large possible fine which probably helped!

I am totally fed up with the pigeons in Duckett Road. There is a family feeding the birds at the front and rear of the property. They cover the pavement with rice and bread. And if that is not enough they put bucket loads of food on top of the rear extension.I am fed up getting bird poo on me daily. I will be contacting the council Monday.

It may be helpful for other people, Jane, if you could report back briefly on HoL about how the Council responds to your complaint and whether or not this works.
