I just had two guys from the London Fire Brigade knock on my door asking if I wanted a smoke alarm check. I checked their ID and they had a look at my alarms, one of which they said wasn't in the right place and the other wasn't working. They said they can come back and fit smoke alarms for free.
After they had left I suddenly wondered if they were genuine and whether I should have let them in so I have called the London Fire Brigade to check and they said that there are indeed teams of firemen out doing door to door free smoke alarm tests in this area.
Have they knocked at anyone else's house?

They called here a couple of months ago, made an appointment for a week later which was confirmed from LFB by letter. They returned and fitted a new alarm at no charge. Quite happy they were genuine.
Thanks John. In fact they came back a little earlier with all the stuff to fit the smoke alarms and the Hornsey appliance was sitting outside my house. I was just on my way out to a meeting at school but they said they would come back later. They were doing a couple of houses in Wightman Road. What a great initiative.
If they turn up in a fire truck I'd probably believe them. Otherwise, twice shy.
Yes, I agree but the first time they knocked this morning I couldn't see the fire engine - I feel bad I doubted them now but you just can't be too careful can you?
Delighted to say that three very nice firemen have just been to fit a couple of smoke alarms for us, all free of charge. Apparently its a London Fire Brigade initiative to get all householders to have them fitted.
Will they come round every year to check and change the batteries? I've never forgotten reading about a fire in which a child was killed - the council-fitted alarm hadn't gone off as the battery had been borrowed for another purpose - a common occurence, the chief fire officer said.
I think the batteries in the LFB alarms last for 10 years.
All the more reason to switch them to the TV remote.
