Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Next month you'll have the opportunity to book a slice of time to around Alexandra Park on Segway Personal transporter.

A quick flick around the web suggests that people enjoy their sessions. Here's a typical review of a similar experience in Windsor from Trip Advisor :

Segway Rally: a must do...great fun and would love to do it again soon. Pity it's not longer but time does fly when having fun. Perfect day out.

Sessions have been arranged in September, October and December. The cost is £39 per person or £32 where two or more are booking together. The organiser's website suggests that this gets you an hour long 'tour' including a short training session.

Booking advised. More on the Ally Pally website.

I had a go on one of these about ten years ago in San Jose. The balancing ability (to and fro) is amazing and impressive.

But there's one aspect that seems counter-intuitive to me, perhaps especially to me as a motorcyclist. Steering is accomplished, not by turning the tiller as one might expect, but by twisting the right hand-grip forwards and backwards, as one would twist the throttle on a motorcycle. This takes getting used to and seems unnatural.

One of the hopes for this expensive gadget was that it might wean Americans off car-use for short journeys. To the tiny extent that its had any effect, its weaned some people off walking! An unintended consequence. Some city administrations in the US have banned them from use on the sidewalk - good luck to those who want to use them on a freeway!

I believe they've found a niche use in big warehouses; some postmen postpeople (<- PC correction) use them. I could see some brave elderly using them.

They are fun to try.

There's currently a local deal on for this through the new Amazon Local Deals service offering a saving of at least 50%.

A good deal, but Hendon or Cheshunt not Alexandra Park.

Thanks for making that clear Stephen.
