School Places for this Autumn 2012. is there a shortage?

I was told before I moved to crouch end "oh perfect, they have great schools in haringey, good move with children."

Since I have been here one year, all I hear, over and over again is the nightmare of the school applications and how no one gets a place.

I am only starting to apply for nursery place for my eldest, but the year after I will have to face this process. Can anyone give me advice having been through it? My house seems to be in a black hole for schools. All the schools I visited and liked have a 0.2 distance and I am 0.5 from ALL of the schools! So where will I get in? Is there any point listing the schools that clearly I am too far from?? I am so confused.

You will be in the lap of the Gods, as we were.  You will be offered a place in the school nearest to you with an available space.  To be fair, this year has been the worst to date, with an apparent spike in birth stats for this year.  Hopefully by the time you need a place, the catchment areas may have stretched.  In answer to your specific question about listing schools that you are clearly too far from, the answer would be "yes"; you should list the six schools that are most suitable for you.  I am glad that I put Weston Park in 2nd place despite being some way out of their catchment area, as I am now higher up their waiting list than S Harringay who are 4 streets away due to the fact that they put an extra "bulge" class there this year.  My understanding is that these "bulge" classes are employed as and when required, but aren't put in the same school two years running.  If you have more than one, you will at least get preference for the younger siblings to join the eldest wherever they are placed.
