Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Japanese Knotweed at 62 Wightman Road
A couple of us have emailed Haringey council and put a leaflet through the door of the affected house, to alert that 62 Wightman Road has cut down and bagged up the Japanese Knotweed that has been growing prolifically over the last few years in the front and back garden of this property.
This stuff is lethal and extremely hazardous to property, causing untold structural damage to buildings (no 62 has already been strapped). It can regenerate from a piece the size of a pea. Proper removal of it should take place and concern is that this may not happen and it will end up being dumped illegally. In fact cutting it down is not a remedy for its removal and usual practice is injecting/spraying it with herbicides.

This issue was raised with The Council last year after concerns were expressed about the line of site for vehicles leaving Cavendish Road being blocked. In addition there were concerns that the stuff may, in previous years, have been cut down and put in the bin. Enforcement took action and I believe the Landlord was fined a token amount. Currently the stuff has been cut back and the waste, which is categorised as hazardous, is sitting in black bin bags in the front garden. This property is an eyesore and has been the source of a number of issues including the siting of a massive illegal advertising banner on the gable end.

I raised this with the council a few weeks ago due to the obstruction to sight when turning out of the road - didn't realise it was JKW though! No reply from the council btw....

This is all the info on the LBH site, which is a bit pathetic. It addresses only domestic law - I believe this is a notifiable hazardous crop and it's certainly illegal to dispose of it yourself. The LBH site says to call Veoila for specialist disposal, so maybe you should do that? Dump them in it.
It can be eliminated but it will take years if they have left the tiniest bit of root or leaf behind. There is now a biological control being tried, or glyphosate weedkillers will do it if systematically used and reapplied. As it will bust apart concrete, you have to be impressed by its desire to live.
You can't sell a house that has it, or at least can't get a mortgage. So if you're next door you have every right to get annoyed.
Bloody landlords. Hanging's too good for them.

Thanks. I phoned them (Veolia) and it hasn't been reported for collection. They were pretty useless too as they said that Haringey Council have to book in the collection even though it has their contact details on the website!

This house on Wightman at the top of Cavendish road have chopped down their knotweed and it is now flapping about it open bags next to their wheely bins, just getting blown about in the wind!! yikes!
I am on the phone to Veolia to report it but no one is answering so far!!
