We dropped in to the Shanghai in Stoke Newington/Dalston yesterday. Worth a visit if only for the decor - the tiling and the counter have been retained from the original pie and mash shop, but from the limited selection we tried, the food's not bad either. Tasty home style dim sum (from the shorter evening dim sum menu.) and capital spare ribs.

I can just about remember when this was a pie and mash shop, called F.Cooke. I believe it is listed at grade II hence the retention of the fittings. My first job after leaving school was nearby and one lunchtime I nervously ventured into F Cooke's and brought some pie and mash (and liquor of course) from a fearsome lady. It didn't taste too bad as I recall nearly 40 years later..
I find this really sad - Cooks were part of my childhook and pie and mash shops are now very few and far between. :(
I can remember going in there with my wife and 3 girls every Saturday. Flat meat pies, lumpy mash potato and great liquor. Oh great times, even the kids liked it.
