Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

If you happen to notice that Zam's is closed down and the windows white washwed, they're not moving out. There was a fire there the other day which was spotted by an eagle eyed Rob Chau from Tao Sports. Rob said to me "Have you ever seen a fireman work? So impressive".

So a virtual cup of cheer to the guys with the yellow helmets.

No was was hurt in the fire.

Anette, you seem to have entirely missed my point which was you wishing bad karma on a business which isn't doing that much harm.  I was suggesting a bit more neighbourly encouragement for them to be responsible which i believe is the main aim of this website (or maybe i'm wrong).  Why don't you pop down there and introduce your self and show them your comments because i am happy to go down there and show them for you.  I like the way you appear to want to speak for all the people in your road. This area is a wonderful place to live. Which brings me to another point of my original post was that a lot of ordinary people enjoy fast food.  P.s I don't think they serve pidgeons otherwise they wouldn't have a five star rating.

(Minor deletes made to this comment to bring it into line with our terms of service 2, k, i)

Pigeon is lovely. I believe the restaurants of Crouch End sell them.

Ditto. Anette's repeated sour comments when anyone disagrees with her are among the reasons I stopped bothering to engage on this site a long time ago. I also dislike the rubbish outside Zam's - while appreciating the friendly service - but sarcasm in response to another poster (and dodging the reasonable suggestion that you voice your concerns directly to the business) is not the answer.

Maybe we could also ban buses because people discard old tickets on the pavement and close Sainsbury's because of the traffic. Unless Zam's begin heaping hot chicken straight into customers' hands, it seems there's very little they can do to cut down on idiots littering.

Incidentally, I also stopped using this otherwise admirable site regularly because of the aggressive tone and gang mentality of some members.

I've never been in to discuss their social responsibility to the local community (i.e. clearing up after their customers), nor have I mentioned anything to the off licence on the other corner....does anyone know if anyone has? Do we know what their response was?

I wish no harm to the owners or employees although I do think all businesses have an element of responsibility to the local area; just as it is expected of a resident to refrain from storing rubbish in their front garden and keep their hedge tidy/unobstructive (just a couple of examples) I think that a business whose existence results in an unusually large amount of refuse outside their premises (which include items that attract vermin in the case of the chicken shop, and broken glass that could cause injury in the case of the off licence) should have an obligation to manage it (e.g. provide additional bins and perform regular litter checks).

They are not the only "culprits" of litter at that end of Seymour Road; I've often seen residents of the flats there (whose doors open straight on to the street) leave bags of rubbish on the footpath, these are often ripped open and litter strewn around, I suspect by local foxes overnight. This is only going to get worse if/when fortnightly litter collections start. I wonder whether one of those large bins on wheels (god knows what they're called) can be located somewhere close for them to use? Don't get me wrong, I can hardly blame them for putting their rubbish out, I wouldn't like to have bags of rubbish sitting in my kitchen waiting for to be collected, but surely something can be done.

If you're reluctant to talk directly to the store owners, I know you'll get at least a sympathetic ear from Rob Chau of the Harringay Traders Association. He runs Tao Sports between Seymour and Warham. He has no magic wand and traders are not bound by the Association's writ, but Rob will at least give you a sense of what's possible and, if feasible, will do his best to influence.

Admittedly I am reluctant to approach them, partially as I expect to just be laughed out of the shop, partially as I feel slightly intimidated (which might be unfair on my part, but just the way it is I'm afraid).

I'll pop in to Tao and speak to Rob. Thanks Hugh.
