I'm a writer and need to replace my upright piano which seems to be in its death throes. Apart from playing for pleasure, I also write libretti and lyrics so need for work....I don't have a lot of money but would do my best to come up what's needed for something that would fit the bill.

Probably I'd not be able to afford anything from a business like this but will check out. Many thanks for your reply.
There is sombody offering one on the sales board on these forums
Thanks Lisa. Think they're all very old but have replied to all those selling upright. Also, Pete's suggestion prompts me to consider hire to buy if I can swing it.
Hiya. I bought my piano from J.Reid, on St Ann's Road, a few years ago. They're really nice people. When you go in, ask to see their reconditioned pianos. Mr Reid takes you through to a big room full of second-hand - but fully reconditioned - pianos. The workshop there is amazing... anyway I bought mine for a painstakingly-saved £800. He had some for less but to be honest you'd have to aim for that kind of amount for something decent. Since they recondition pianos, you could ask about doing a part-exchange for your dying piano. They might well do some kind of deal there. Otherwise, if thats too much money for you, you just have to look out on the private sellers' second-hand market where obviously there's variable quality, although you do get the odd "hasn't been used for years, take it away and its yours for free and a good tuning will do the trick" (if you're lucky!) one. You can also keep an eye out for second-hand keyboards - things like a Yamaha Clavinova: the old ones can be found for not much ££ and have passable piano sounds and the keys are weighted to feel more-or-less piano-like. Failing that Yamaha do a cheap keyboard for about £130 which has 'semi-weighted' keys... not great but better than not weighted at all... I bought one a couple of years ago for playing at shows/gigs/etc - nice and portable! Good luck anyway! Pete B
Many thanks. I don't have that much at once but the ones they do rent to buy are a lot more than that....and they only do this scheme with new ones. One does need to pay more for overstrung decent quality and was willing to but new ones are a lot more plus only a percentage of rental goes towards buying! Anyway, in the end I've taken a bit of a chance and bought one on ebay. Did research on Challoner which appears to be good make, old North LOndon firm, pianos BBC used and photos showed in good condition, paid 400 for it...fingers crossed it is as described! Thanks so much for your reply. I'd love to see Reid workshop anyway as looks like cool place. (Btw, don't like keyboards! Just a personal thing but I like the real thing, grew up with grand pianos!)
hi, oh great - well good luck I hope the Challoner works out! I'm with you on the keyboards! All the best, Pete
