Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I see Sally Deasy-Mulready has just been appointed by President Michael D Higgins to Ireland's Council of State (Privy Council equivalent, more or less, though it doesn't meet in the presidential privy). A well deserved honour IMO. Sally has been a doughty fighter in many 'Irish in Britain' causes since back in the 1980s when it was neither popular nor profitable to be so engaged. If I'm not mistaken, she's the first ever appointee to the Council from the diaspora - so let's hope that it's a sign that Dublin will soon get around to extending the septennial presidential vote to that diaspora and to the North of Ireland. (Well, it doesn't look as if I'm to have a vote for any local Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Head of State anytime soon.)

Sally is, of course, head of the Mulready dynasty of Hackney Councillors. Despite my admiration for her over the past three or four decades, that may not necessarily extend to an extension of that dynasty across Haringey or even Harringay. Nevertheless, like all our wannabe councillors, young Nora has 28 months to try to change my mind.

Hi Eddie

I talked to Sally yesterday. She told me that she thought it was a great honour for all Irish immigrants. Sally campaigned to free the Birmingham Six. Seems to be pretty radial appointment but well deserved. she will need to study up on the Irish constitution

Another surprise was Ruairí McKiernan who is a good friend of the catholic worker He was involved in the campaign to stop the US military using Shannon airport along with us the CW and of course President Michael D Higgins.

OAE, please tell people a bit more about the causes Sally has fought for so successfully. Over the years I've met her only briefly - and knew about only a fraction of the campaigns she fought - and is still fighting. For example her charity work, and about the Magdalene laundries.

Hi Con and Alan,

Sorry, I missed your comments a fortnight ago and didn't see them until yesterday. As it happens, Mark Hennessy has a very full feature on Sally in today's Irish Times Weekend Review.

Alan, I've attempted to 'share' the article by your email - in response to your invite above. Let me know if it fails to carry. Alternatively, try www.irishtimes.com under 'People: The President's Emigrant' .

As you say, Con, a radical Michael D Seven to balance out some of the old predictables on the Council. Glad to see McKiernan there as well as my old friend and classmate, Michael Farrell - formerly of the Communist Party, People's Democracy and, more recently, Liberty. Michael D at 70 is going to lead the revolution from the old Viceregal Lodge in Phoenix Park. At least he'll maybe keep the Fine Gael lot on their toes.

Thanks Eddie, I've emailed you a reply and your link works fine.
