Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Happy christmas to us from London buses! My daughter, 15 years old, had been out later than usual in the dark late home, she had jumped on the bus and realised as the bus began its journey that she had dropped her pass whilst changing buses. As our area is not safe there have been a few recent rapes and a man stabbing women with a potentially hiv infected needle she understandably stayed on the bus so she could get home safely. An inspector got on and gave her a fine. Despite me appealing with proof that she had a valid oyster and had reported it lost since this incident and had another issued (cost us 10.00) and considering she had not had a fine before they still refused to waive the fine. It has cost us 25.25p, very painful at this time of year in our limited circumstances, but more painful is the lack of heart and concern for the safety of my daughter that has been shown and clear lack of interest in the humanity of the situation. What a sad sign of our times where the heart beat is slowly grinding to a halt. Wishing myself the strength to find this experience one that infuses my passion to be the change....

Hi Gilly

Here's a link to who you can contact if you feel you have been treated unfairly (no pun intended):

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_world/travel_index_ew/publ...

Near the bottom of the peg is a link to London TravelWatch, which is allegedly an independent body

I like the pun though very funny:) Need a laugh obviously! Thank you for the link I will explore!

I assure you that London TravelWatch IS an independent body.

And it is the appropriate body to raise this issue with. (They can only deal with complaints when the complaints process, in this case with TFL, is exhausted.) The bad news is that they are unlikely to be able to help as the penalty fare is charged for being on the bus without a valid oyster, which fact is agreed. However sometimes special pleading can succeed and as you have evidence of immediate prior use of the oyster it is worth trying -just about.

be interested to hear how you get on.

This is the result of the large numbers of fare dodgers, all of whom probably have similar stories to tell if caught.

I have every sympathy for your daughter: none for the dodgers.

Well this is the frustration. Getting the fine is understandable because dodgers do lie. The facts though were clear when I bothered to write and send an appeal that in this case she was not dodging and had a valid oyster at the beginning of her journey therefore they could have accepted the appeal and let the fine go but they did not offer any leniency at all. Therefore is has nothing to do with the dodgers but to do with the system that cares only about making money!

This seems a bad decision in several respects.

Not least because it undermines the independence and self reliance of a young person out on her own. And someone who has told the truth and - quite rightly - expects "bureaucracy" to apply rules with sensitivity and - as you say Gilly - with some heart and humanity.

As well as the suggestions other people have made, can I add that you could also contact our London Assembly Member Joanne McCartney.  Contact details on her webpage here.

Joanne is very hard-working and I've always found her helpful on Transport related issues. Especially getting Transport for London to move. (I normally expect them to trot out the reasons why they can't do something.)

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

Strange when a city and it's people, as well as John D become obsessed with people 'dodging' two pounds fares .. yet the Government and the mayor of London flit around with people that quite openly avoid paying millions of pounds in taxes every year.... But no doubt putting some of their gains into funding the tory party..

One of the reasons I quit the dump..  time to get your priorities right!

German tax evasion: 'one of the largest economic scandals ever in Germany's post-World ... (2008) And how would you know whether evasion is still going on or not Stephen. Your slagging off the UK does get boring at times.

I didn't say I approve of fare evasion .. What I said was is that you make much too much of it .. Always kicking those that are 'mostly' down  .. while supporting those big boys who break the law because it makes them feel better about yourselves..

Your continual digs at gays and those poorer than yourself is unacceptable but typical of your snide society..

@Billy Hole.. no please not the Boulevard argument again - it's been disproved..

Ah, the slagging off seems to have struck a nerve.. I grew up in Tottenham & Harringay and know exactly how British society works.. and how class based jealousy and nastiness is played out.. see it regularly here with the 'dodger' comments

Oh but it''s OK to continually call the Germans N+zis, when all the time it's British pesonalities, royalty and politicians that play about with that..

Hah, Billy Hole  - no chance of me becoming another 'Littlejohn' - because luckily I don't suffer from the same problem that he does - The one that gave him that surname..

The Boulevard problem has been disproved in

Amsterdam

Rotterdam

Antwerpen

Brussels

Köln

München

Stuttgart

Liverpool

York

etc. etc. etc.,

Only Londoners can't cope with them ..

Billy Hole wrote: Its the same with expats everywhere - am sure I would do the same - I'm hardly going to pop on to a website and say how rubbish my decision to leave my home country was - of course I'm going to big up where I am now. Visit any expat website.

Sorry forgot to answer.. Yes, there certainly is something in what you say..

I suppose I have to 'bear all'  here: My reason for leaving was, the class system. Judging people by how they talk and also by their sexuality. Watch any British TV programme or listen to any radio programme and it's always there to see.. Nothing has changed!

If I'm honest, maybe I do have a chip on my shoulder about that..

@ Stephen

I did not say Your slagging off the UK does get boring at times - it was Matt

I have never indulged in  continual digs at gays - that would be very odd of me.

Digs at those poorer than myself ?  I'm one of the volunteers in the Haringey Winter Shelter project for the homeless. I try to suppress my sniggers of amusement as I chat with the homeless guests.

Since you're getting personal Stephen - no I better not. But does the name Willam Joyce ring a bell with you ?
