I've been following it on Twitter. The police have said that it's not connected with the current troubles, but a range of people have also reported small knots of youths hanging around before the fire.
It may be that this is part of a developing pattern. There was a big fire at the recycling centre in Tottenham last night and another elsewhere in the borough. There is not yet any evidence that suggest these are any more than accidental fires, but I'm watching.
Prompted by the cloud of acrid smoke that wafted over our garden and loud booming noises (we are two blocks to the east) we went down to have a look. It was one of the factories on the west side of Lawrence Road, closer to Philip Lane than West Green Road. The noise, apparently, was the windows blowing out.
It's out now, and the road was going to be opened again shortly. No flats nearby and the police seemed very calm and were friendly and chatty. They seemed to think that on the whole things were quiet, and there certainly wasn't any big fuss or signs of a more general disturbance. Can't hear any more helicopters, although there are still a fair amount of sirens in the distance - but I don't think they are associated with this fire, it seemed very under control.
The police officers also said that they were from Wood Green, not Tottenham, and were now on their 17th day of duty on 12 hour shifts.
