See my mini-report here.

Just found this on youtube. Look at the shops targeted by these little shits. H&M, JD sports... just criminal chavs. Noticed Dorothy Perkins and M&S were left well alone.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAII_KuXfsE

Jesus!

That looks like broad daylight - where the hell are the police?

Heard about this from a photographer (working for the New York Times) reporting to BBC radio this morning. Said he went over to Wood Green High Rd early morning and was surprised to see the looting had moved so far over from the centre of the rioting/looting in Tottenham. This smash & grab activity at WG that he saw was happening between 1am and 5am.

The damage to property in Tottenham High Rd from fire is terrible. Not only small businesses destroyed but historical buildings totally gutted. It's madness. The council's recent investment in that area, in doing up buildings in Bruce Grove has been destroyed in a night.

Yes Matt and the Police should have known by following twitter.. I presume that's what they are trained to do in case of a terrorist attack -- Well, you should know anyway..

I knew 950km away what was happening and the streets that were mentioned on twitter i.e. Broad Lane.

For it continue for four hours seems excessive to me .. to get police from all over London surely doesn't take that long..

@Justine Maybe this tweet from five hours ago might go some way to answering your question..

So this little thug admits to being part of it. I hope the police finally sees this, and locks the thieving bastard up. Along with the rest of them. The looting is just the usual lowlife shoplifters getting away with a lot more than they normally do. I am utterly disgusted by the whole thing. Idiots destroying their own community, what's the point? Please don't tell me it's over a dead crminal, that's just a pathetic excuse. So angry!

No, it's about bad policing of an underclass, which has been allowed to grow over the last twenty years.. producing underacheiving, envious and vicious young people.. and this is the result...

It happens every so often, effort (and money) is put into the area and the problem dies down.. until the next time..

Do you honestly believe that they ever think of community?  If you do, you are living in cloud-cuckoo land..

Sticking them all in prison will no doubt be the outcome of all this, but that is just like throwing your litter unheeded onto the street -- to wait for someone else to pick it up.. It isn't the answer in the long term.

I'm down on Green Lanes and sadly there has been a little fallout from Tottenham. However it''s highly targeted smash and grab. One jewellery shop on the corner of Kimberly has been affected. Further towards Finsbury Park, Deniz Jewellers was also affected. Both had their shutters forced open, windows broken and a few less valuable items taken.

Talking to Bora, owner of one of the affected shops, he told me "We also own the food shop a few doors away and 15 of us stayed around to make sure the staff were ok. We did'nt really expect anything. We left at 6.30 this morning thinking that everything would be ok. Then as soon as we left my staff watched as 8 men came in a van, pried open the shutter and robbed us. It was all very quick and efficient."

Bora went on "This is just some bad guys taking advantage of the trouble over in Tottenham"

Everything else down here is very calm and normal feeling, though I can't help feeling a slight sense of something in the air; surprise, apprehension or perhaps it's just a concentrated focus on ignoring the few ripples and getting on with a summer Sunday.
Thanks Hugh. Visiting family in NZ, and for the second time this year am feeling the hopelessness of distance. Was in Harringay in February trying to find out about friends & family after the Earthquake in NZ; now sitting in NZ trying to find out what I'll be coming back to in London.  Still, it seems I heard about the looting in Wood Green quicker than the Met did, even from over here...

Malcolm, should you need more reassurance, here's normality of the Lanes this morning:

Just back from Tottenham. The air is thick and heavy with smoke and the smell of burning rubber. There are burned-out cars along the High Road and even one in Wood Green. Looting seems to have focused on betting shops, mobile shops, other small, sellable items. The Spurs ticket office is smashed up, along with William Hill next door. Allied Carpets and Aldi in flames. Tottenham Hale retail park is sealed off. Tottenham High Road job centre has been smashed up. A sweetshop owner is said to be among those taken to hospital. People are hurt and angry. About the events that led to yesterday's protest at the police station and about the events of last night. There are simmering tensions and we need to be especially careful not to jump to conclusions about who was behind last night's events. A sad, sad day for our neighbours.
