LONDON RESOURCE NEWS

* From the grapevine - Hackney's new wine refill scheme

It appears that the days of returning rinsed-out glass bottles for reuse could be making a comeback. A refill scheme, launched in the Dalston branch of Borough Wines, has proved a resounding success - accounting for over half the wine sold in the shop. Not surprising, as customers can save over 50% on a bottle of wine using the scheme. As for environmental benefits, it has been estimated that the production of a typical bottle of wine produces 1kg of carbon emissions - one third of this comes from the manufacture of the bottle. The financial and environmental benefits are therefore obvious, sadly the only comparable scheme in London is at Borough Wines' branch in Borough market.

That's great - just like a French wine co-operative.

Fair Deal supermarket in Seven Sisters already does different cleaning liquid refills. Lagu who runs the shop is looking at expanding the refill options.. if there is interest he could get some wine in. Visit fairdealshop.co.uk for address and contact details...

If you're over Seven Sisters way or can find an excuse to be, then do visit Lagu's shop. I was warmly welcomed on a visit there not so long ago.
