I think the last were 'officially' withdrawn in 1978, but some were put back into service as a replacement for the 'lavatorial' sounding 1983!! Tube stock on the Jubilee Line (long since scrapped) which was serverely unreliable.. 1972 stock was transferred from the Bakerloo, which was replaced by some stored 1938 stock.
A few 1938 stock trains worked on the Piccadilly Line before the Victoria Line was opened in the 1960s, due to shortages of 1959 Stock after the trains were lengthened to cope with the serious overcrowding then prevailing.
They certainly ran on the Bakerloo line when I was young (in the 1950s). The Bakerloo line then included what is now the Jubilee line between Baker Street and Stanmore.
If you look at the route map in the picture, it clearly displays the Northern Line.
Yes Robert, the 1938 stock was intended for the Bakerloo & Northern Lines (as it became known in 1937) .. Similar stock was delivered in 1949, allowing for a couple of trains to work on the Piccadilly Line.
BTW, just for the record: the late lamented 1983 Tube Stock, which had a very short lifespan indeed..
