Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone shopped there and lived to tell the tale? I walk past it every day, but I have never been in, purely because IT STINKS. And fresh fish does not smell.
The smell is probably not helped by the fact that their rubbish is placed in black bags a bit further down by Zam's Chicken, and they clean the floor and chuck the fishy water out on to the pavement. I am hoping for another cool summer, I can only imagine what it will smell like in the heat..
Anyone actually been in there? I never see any customers.

As I have pointed out - the reason I have not shopped there is because I find the smell really offensive, and I wanted to know if the shop is as bad as it smells. Apparently not. There are plenty of people on here that have said they're happy with the shop.
I have to walk past and smell that shop every day, which for me makes it even worse. I am have not singled out one shop with the sole intention of giving it bad publicity - the replies on here are more than balanced, if you read the whole thread.
My personal opinion is that I still think the smell speaks for itself, just wait until the summer, if we get a hot one there will be loads more people complaining.
I was not aware that only positive comments were allowed on this forum. It kind of defeats the object, does it not?
I think you should be more aware of the possible consequences of what you write on here is all. I believe the shop is run independently by a family who probably rely on the income from this shop to get by day to day. Your negative comments could possibly have a huge impact on their business as you have posted them on a public forum. If you havnt gone to the effort of asking them not to leave their bin bags at the end of the road, or to refrain from throwing their dirty fish water out on to the street, I think it is harsh to start posting about it on the internet. On the other hand, if you have already spoken to them about your concerns and they have failed to act on them, fair game.

I remember when they first opened up and sent out flyers about their new shop. The delivery guy was placing the leaflets on the ground in front gardens rather than putting them through letter boxes, which caused a bit of a mess when the leaflets got blown in to the street. I called them up and brought this to their attention - they apologised and I later saw the leaflet boy picking up the leaflets that had littered the road. They are very receptive to concerns raised by residents in the neighbourhood if you give them a chance.
Well said Rahman.

Like others on this forum, I've had nothing but good experiences at the fish shop. The fish has been good and the owners friendly and helpful.

On this repeated claim about the smell or "stink": I come from a town with a thriving fishing community and a big open fish market. Fish, as fresh as can be off the boats, really does smell. It's fish!

On the rubbish issue: I agree it's a problem. But I'm not sure it's all down to the fish shop, if at all. That little stretch of pavement has become a dumping ground for all sorts of rubbish, including broken furniture. The sign posted by the council warning about fines for fly-tipping seems to have become a magnet for mocking rather than a deterrent.
Strikes me that this discussion has gone the same way as the Baldwin's one. One member raises, as they are entitled to, a concern about a local shop but the unanimous response is supportive of the shop. It's the type of conversation that would have gone on in the post office queue, or the like, in days gone by.

My sense is that community opinion has made it clear the fish shop's ok. It's informed me and whilst I haven't shopped there in the past (tut), I'm now much more likley to.

PS: Open to prosecution Sandy? Grief now you've got me worried. Perhaps you'd better send me a private mail telling me what you know on this.
Sorry Hugh, I never meant for you to get in trouble. As for the shop, after this I'm even less likely to go there, and the council has been informed again re. the smell.
No apologies needed. All views aired. Probbaly nuff said on this one.
I have bought fish there with no problems and they are always very helpful. I like to support local independent shops.
