Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Brick through the kitchen window, big mess, lots taken. So much for security, good locks etc. Still, it's the first time in 17 years in this house. Horrible - worried they might come back again now they've done it once.

Going to fit a burglar alarm, does anyone have any recommendations about this?

Really sorry to hear this.
Sorry to hear this too. It's a horrible feeling - I've been through it twice (not here, in Milan)

Sorry to hear Maddy.

Happened to me twice!

Think they did a revisit, to take the stuff we bought to replace what they stole the first time.

I was fortunately home, standing next to a kitchen block with very large knives, when they came the second time.

Now THAT was fun!

Maddy, you can get a quote from Securebase for an alarm install. Ask for Dariush. Although not a cheap option it should deter other unwanted visits in future. Get their annual monitor & maintenance package as well which costs £195pa.

Otherwise a cheaper option is to install an alarm yourself which rings your mobile when you're out, if you get an intruder (then you ring the police). Another person on HOL recently decided on a Yale alarm self install (took about 6 hours to do) and that system cost £300.

Any questions feel free to PM

Christ! Whereabouts are you?
Maddy, out of curiosity (but also to try to figure out how to make our homes safer) after throwing the brick did they break the rest of the glass to get physically in, or do you have a door that opens easily from the inside i.e. not with a key you can remove and put out of sight? And do you have single or double glazing?

Single glazed - they didn't completely clear the glass but climbed in and out through a jagged shaped hole in the window, including taking the stolen stuff out that way! The brick damaged my cooker and worktop - it must have been hurled from quite a distance. The police were surprised, and said thieves don't usually like breaking windows because it draws too much attention (although my neighbour was home and heard nothing).

The police were on the scene within an hour of my call, with full forensics, pretty impressive. They couldn't find traces of blood, but found a couple of fingerprints.

I think it was probably teenage kids, as there was one hanging around out front earlier who saw me go out. I have really good locks on all doors and windows, and always remove keys when I'm out. I've decided an alarm is really the only extra thing I can do.

Anette, I'm on the lower ladder, but don't want to be more specific. I think repeat attempts are rather common, unfortunately.

incredible....

daytime or night time?

Day.

Sorry to hear this

Was this from the street or the back garden?

If the back garden, could be worth seeing if there is anything you could do deter people from climbing your fence. Spiky things - be that roses or something more artificial. Been thinking about this recently after my neighbour spotted someone in his back garden (we're mid terrace).

Or window bars are an option...not very attractive but you can get removable ones that you can unlock and detach when you are home and want to enjoy the view across the garden. I stopped noticing mine after a while anyway when I lived in a house with them.

Another possibility is laminated glass on vulnerable windows - can bounce the brick back!  And doesn't shatter so badly.

Regarding spiky plants, I have a great deal of respect for pyracantha.  Vicious long thorns, grows like a weed, lots of white flowers at this time of year plus berries for the birds in the autumn.

We have been burgled three times since last November. Once in the evening when we were downstairs watching tv, and once when i was by myself in bed. Fortunately I did not get up when I heard them.  Our security locks had been removed by the builders.

we have an alarm, but its not on when we are in the house.

Seems to us that lots of money and time is given to victim support, but less on detection. Got a great big dog now, hope that puts them off.
