Proposal for New Primary School (Free School) Register your interest by 27th May
I was in the library earlier today and came across a leaflet entitled "Concerned about getting the right primary school place for your child in 2012?". Damn right I am!
The leaflet is published by the Constable Educational Trust who say "CET wants to increase your options by opening a brand new, state-funded primary school (aka free school) in your area in September 2012. We will focus our initial proposal to open a new school on the area of London where there is most demand. If you think this should be your area then we would encourage you to get as many people as you can, who have children starting primary school in September 2012 to sign up."
I know nothing about this particular organisation, or the wider political view on the "free schools" debate; but I do know I would like as many options to be available for me to consider so I am certainly going to sign up.
You need to "sign up" before 27th May 2011. The leaflet provided a Freepost Form to complete (Freepost RLSL UJXY BUKH, 15 St John's Hill, London SW11 1TN). But I think you can also e-mail your details to rondafogel@cetrust.net. Their website is www.cetrust.net.
The form reads:
"By providing the following details you are only indicating your interest, not applying for a place. If you have a child who will be aged 4 between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012 and you would like to have a Constable Educational Trust primary school in your local area, please complete the following"

it's going to be in the East of the borough & Highgate school had something to do with it.
So Highgate School would like a Free Feeder to cream off the future Lammies of Haringey's mysterious Orient ?
OTOH, if you'd like a Highgate School for £5K less per term I'd recommend St Aloysius' College. I'm sure by September 2018 they'll find room for a girls' intake too.

The whole idea of free schools is something that I personally find worrying as from what I understand it can lead to all sorts of weird groups being free to take public cash to set up a school that is effectively private and not accountable to local authorities, regardless of the needs of the area, and that can select pupils in an arbitrary way and therefore also have a negative impact on existing local schools.
However, this particular project - judging by what they say on their website - seems worth keeping an eye on and seems at least on paper well intentioned, including its stated intention of working closely with other primary schools in the area. Given the serious threat of lack of places for primary school children for 2012 it may be worth supporting in principle this project i.e. expressing an interest before the deadline. Particularly because it looks like the Trust behind the proposal will chose which part of London they will set the school up according to how much interest/need there is..
We can always decide later, once we know more about it, that it's not right for our children...?

that's a secondary school right? I am sure you are right, but I haven't got as far as researching that...too far off into the future for me. Antoinette's preoccupation and mine is ensuring we get a place reasonably nearby for our children in reception next year. A slightly different topic.
It's quite sad that the government withdraws funding for extra primary places in Haringey for 2011 and 2012, and then the charity sector has to step in. Yes, that's precisely the plan I guess - the Big Society. It would have been much easier to fund those extra places in existing schools, given this new free school will have to get public funds anyway. But we can't control that now, and we have to be pragmatic about getting our children a place in school. So what should we do?

Just read your article, thanks for the link. Very interesting. The other contender you mention - the Academy of Entrepreneurial and Sporting Excellence - already sounds dreadful to my ear! Could they have come up with a more right-on title?

Free schools worry me. Two tier education worries me. I was a single parent and my children went to the worst schools in the areas of London and France where we lived. Both my kids managed to avoid getting into trouble and both went on to university – not that either of them have used what they learnt there but the piece of paper gained has opened otherwise closed doors.
For me the emphasis should be: if you don't like your local school, do something about making it better. If enough people got involved, a lot can be done.
We don't want choice. We want our local school/hospital to work well.

I totally agree with you. However I think it needs to be stressed again that there aren't enough places in local primary schools at the moment because of bad planning /lack of funds so if we are discussing this and considering the option of this free school it's not because we don't like our local schools - in fact I really like all of them - but we are at risk of not getting a place in any of them because they are all pretty much oversubscribed or at risk of being so next year (possible exception West Green Primary I think). Many other local schools are religious and for parents who don't go to church they are not an option. There is a risk we may be randomly allocated a place somewhere really far from home.
