BBC: Plan to bring UK clocks forward

The proposals will be published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in the coming week, the BBC has been told.

So when you next pop up at Gare du Nord no need to change your watch/mobile/ipod/ipad thingy.

This was brought up as recently as June 2010 where the Scottish Secretary said he did not believe any change would be a "sensible or realistic" measure (BBC article). Also discussed here on HOL.

All those in favour say 'Aye'.

All those not in favour say 'Nay'.

Those undecided ... see you at the bar!

Have I got this right? Looking at the sunrise times for December 2010 and taking in account the above proposals would that mean it would still be dark at around 9am throughout December?! Yes I understand it would therefore be sunset for 5pm rather 4pm and I like that but, 9am!

And looking at summer (June 2010) we would therefore have sunset for a while at 10:20pm. Kids would never get asleep; cue increased sales of black out blinds & curtains!

So what? Didn't the country manage on triple summertime during the war? And wasn't that it's best period ever?

Perhaps in these austere times it's exactly what the country needs.. A sneaky reminder to every bloody one of you to pull your fingers out !

Please excuse the irony..

'During the Second World War, double summer time (2 hours in advance of GMT) was introduced and was used for the period when, normally ordinary summer time would have been in force. During the winter clocks were kept one hour in advance of GMT.'

From nmm.ac.uk Appears they've played games with our clocks a number of times over the last century.

The beginning; ...Summer time was first defined in an Act of 1916 that ordained that for a certain period during the year legal time should be one hour in advance of GMT. The Summer Time Acts of 1922 to 1925 extended the period during which summer time was in force and so, from 1916 up to the Second World War, clocks were put in advance of GMT by one hour from the spring to the autumn.

hope for one they don't do it.. purely because it would muck up my radio listening arrangements..

It's very convenient being an hour in front.. feels a bit like winning a race.. and the Archers at 20:15 fits in just nicely after our TV news, not to mention PM at 18:00. Oh well, I'll have to go back to podcasting it..

I think maybe with big business backing it.. (they are the only ones that this government listens to) it might, might just get through..

And anyway, you'd think the Scots were the only ones who have to deal with a dark environment..

So a 'nay' from Stephen over there in Europe.

Don't think the 'Tories' are too concerned about the Scottish vote. If this does go ahead could be the final straw to push the Scots towards a 'yes' vote for independence ..... then they can live in their own time zone.

don't they already? lol

Well, yes. Having lived up there a year, covering the Highlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west coast I'd say the weather and the cold does have a certain bearing on their general demeanour. As is the case for us all ... where ever we live.

Lets not talk about the particularly grey winter we're having over here this year!! Think I need to get a pilot licence!
