Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

By now most residents in the ward should have had this questionnaire dropped through their letter boxes.

 

There has been a mandatory scheme in place since 2006 for larger HMOs but many problems are caused by smaller properties not covered by this scheme. Residents concerns prompted the council to set up a working group to try and address things and the result is this scheme.  This should try to address the problems related to properties converted without permission, properties that are poorly managed, properties that attract a disportionate number of complaints regarding noise, rubbish and general nuisance, issues of anti-social behaviour and poor quality and in some case dangerous housing conditions.

 


In respect of the proposal for the additional licensing scheme for HMOs falling outside the scope of the mandatory scheme, the authority must comply with specific requirements set out in Sections 56 and 57 of the Housing Act 2004. This includes being satisfied that a significant proportion of the HMOs proposed to fall under the additional scheme are being managed sufficiently ineffectively, consultation for the scheme must take place, and the scheme must be consistent with the authority's overall housing strategy.


To adopt this scheme the local authority has to follow a set guidance from the government in order to demonstrate the need from additional licensing within this designated area.  It is essential that they can prove that they need additional powers to control some of the issues that are affecting the area. Therefore it is absolutely vital that as many people respond to the questionnaire as possible.

 

Once this scheme is up and running I am confidence of its success, greatly improving the area for all of us.

The consultation period ends on 7th March 2011 and the report will go to Cabinet for approval in April/May 2011

Personally it has now gotten to the point where I don't want regulation of HMOs and enforcement of planning legislation with regard to converting houses into flats. Should I one day wish to sell my house here and move somewhere perpetually summery, converting it into flats may be my only option. Who would want to buy it as a house with that bloody speed hump outside and all the crap my neighbours leave on the streets and the schools full of children crammed into flats?

 

I don't see anything in this to address the certificate of lawfulness ridiculousness that has seen my neighbourhood turn into Bedsit Land in the past ten years. It's as if someone can steal something, keep it secret for four years and then apply for legitimate ownership.

 

It has been well documented on here that the council already has plenty of powers to deal with flat conversions but they choose not to unless residents basically do their job for them.

Might need to work on the sales pitch if you are planning to sell up...!  ;)

For once john I agree with you, YES YES YES you have turned to the dark-side there is a god ! ! !

People spend there whole living paying for a house and then you get told your not allowed to do what you want to it what rubbish. If it is such a problem why not turn all the flats now into houses again.

A little birdie told me that this set up is a farce so that certian people keep there jobs in the council and a money making scheme.

Oh Julian, I was being slightly tongue in cheek about the flats conversion. Ownership of land is a responsibility often abused and rightly regulated. I'd feel like complete scum turning my house into flats, I just don't see that I'll have that many options. Karen is doing a good thing but I just feel it's too little, too late. The house opposite me is being converted right now, Greek owner, he'll get away with it, even though I've complained to planning.

 

They're not pink and fluffy, they're red and fat. I do hope you're an informed voter, that'll do for them.

....But sue you for what ? And who are these Greek people working for the council ? Gosh, this is all terribly confusing. And there was I asking what I thought was a straightforward question- why the ethnic origin of the chap who owns the house opposite to you is relevant to the subject matter of the discussion in these posts ?.

Just finished reading The Old Curiosity Shop . In the meantime our resident shock jock Johny Mc has still not explained why the ethnic origin of the chap opposite him is relevant in this case of Johny Mc v the Council .

I don't think Johny Mc was necessarily seeking to make this point.I think he was making another point, one which is so opaque and nebulous..... and so finely crafted, that mere mortals can only aspire to reach this level of erudite comprehension.
