Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We have recently been trying to raise awareness of the methods used by pickpockets on the Underground, in an attempt to reduce the number of people falling victim to this age-old theft. Today's Evening Standard has a tremendous article by Ray Connolly which just about sums up what we're up against.

Please be aware of your surroundings when on the Tube (or in any crowded area). If you suspect anybody of being a pickpocket, then call BTP asap!

It doesn't have to be a crowd. I was "done" at the relatively deserted ATM in Crouch End a few years back. One guy pretending to beg, back against the wall near the holes spotting for the likes of me. Another behind me, very tall. A third by my side. I inserted my card and put in my pin. As the card was about to emerge, the one by my side (odd place to be I kinda thought), said "Did you drop this?" pointing to a 5er on the ground between us. Odd, I thought, I didn't think I had a fiver, perhaps it was in my pocket as pulled out my wallet? In a second I bent down and picked it up, and my card was taken by the tall guy behind me who had read my pin as I put it in (he had been close, I thought earlier). They left me to take my money as it emerged, giving them time to disappear. I cancelled my card by mobile within a minute or two and ended up £5 up on the deal. OK not pickpockets but the same kind of teamwork, and the same net effect.
Unfortunately this is a scam carried out by the very same gangs who are pickpocketing. These offences occur all too often, but Police are working hard to erradicate these gangs through arresting the criminals and raising awareness with the public.
