BBC: 'Many Londoners aged over 50 are 'dissatisfied'

Quote;

London has the lowest concentration of people aged over 50 but it also has the highest levels of dissatisfaction, according to research by public sector analysts Experian.

It showed London areas have the nine lowest concentrations of people aged over 50 in England. But the capital's boroughs make up the bottom 10 in this age group's satisfaction with social cohesion.

The research for the BBC shows the capital's over-50 population fell between 1999 and 2009.

The research found Hammersmith and Fulham, Camden, Lewisham, Haringey, Lambeth, Islington, Newham, Southwark, Hackney and Tower Hamlets made up the bottom 10 areas in England for people not satisfied with community cohesion, where this age group replied negatively to the question: "Do neighbours look out for each other?"

Gordon Deuchars, from Age Concern London, said: "Living in a fast moving and anonymous city can be tough on all of us but it can be especially alienating for London's 890,000 older people.

"Maintaining a sense of community is extremely important and we are really concerned that local spending cuts may mean community centres and local groups, which are a real life-line for older Londoners, could be forced to close."

Note; research appears not to be available to the public via Experian . As the BBC has commissioned this research we have to rely on their interpretation of the Experian data.

What is this satisfaction thing? Satisfied about what precisely?
You can go to this page to download what are described as the "FULL DATA". (Scroll down the BBC webpage.) Though to be honest, it's very thin stuff.

Far more interesting, the BBC quotes Prof Raymond Tallis: saying that: " . . . on average people were living three months more for every year that passes".

Great news. Every four years, a bonus year to grow old disgracefully. Of course, the downside is that my enemies will still be swimming - not floating - by.
We all came as a family from NZ in 1978 to live in London to enjoy the diversity of culture and entertainment the city offered. I still enjoy living in London at the age of 73 mainly due to living on the 29 and 341 bus routes which I use day and night. I take part in communities visiting the South Bank as much as I do in Haringey. My family on the other hand, all aged under 55 have abandoned London for pastures they consider greener in other parts of England, Africa and Germany. Many of their friends seem to have made similar moves so are people under 55 satisfied with what London has to offer?
.... so are people under 55 satisfied with what London has to offer?

Good question Margaret. I think the research was looking into services aimed at and provided for older folk in big cities like London. Seems to conclude things could be better. But yes, same probably applies to younger people too!
