Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been aware of websites you can use to test your broadband, but I just came across one that will allow you to then compare all results for your area by provider. If you check on your postcode first, do your locality view and recheck, you'll see your results newly flagged.

Worth a couple of minutes.

This is a great learning experience for me. Thanks. But which FTTx is the BT Infinity offering? The X factor. I am going to ring BT on Tuesday.
BT are using FTTC (Fiber-to-the-cabinet)
If this is true of BT''s "infiiti" service, where they make a play of Fibre Optics, then their advertising is misleading. Most people know that fibre optics is the ultimate form of broadband, but if with BT''s service its only to a cabinet in the street, this falls far short of the impression they have been seeking to convey.

The speed of the internet connection (chain) will be limited by the speed of the slowest link. If that link is telephone wire (ADSL), the most compromised medium, then this is misleading if not false advertising. It would not be the first time that BT have engaged in confusion marketing.

I think it will be a while before we get fibre to the door (or house), mainly because its so expensive. I understand that joining fibre optic cable is non-trivial and the absolute correct alignment of the two ends – radially – is critical.

The Link above (Fiber to the x) is helpful.

Not quite Clive

The speed of the internet connection will be limited by the LENGTH of the slowest link ( if copper ). So cabinet to home is obviously much shorter than exchange to home and permits higher speeds.

Virgin Media and its predecessors have had a monopoly for far too long (see previous threads ad nauseam). Cable is intrinsically much better technology than copper twisted pairs (as used in telephone lines). It will be interesting to see what happens when they finally get some competition.

Just came across a piece of Ofcom research from last year that shows Virgin performing very well for achieved vs advertised speeds:

Full research here.

Yes I thought that as well.  But then BT Infinity is coming along and I am undecided between Virgin Media and BT Infinity.  What do people think?
