absolutely shocked!
I had to go to a main post office yesterday to do what i thought was a simple enough task
which required the clerk to check certain documents, what i was told by the said clerk has left me speechless!! " The passport cannot be checked because you are a FOREIGNER", am i being too sensitive here or is this normal behavior? incidently the passport is an irish one and irish do not require visa's to travel to the uk .

The UK Post Office probably doesn't have on-line access to Irish passport data.

This really surprises me as I thought an EU passport was the same whichever country it was issued in. My husband was a Yank, had "right of abode" here stamped in his US passport thanks to British (well, Northern Irish) father, but elected to take Irish rather than British citizenship for sentimental (grandparents) reasons. He was entitled to hold all three nationalities. I can't remember there ever being a problem about him not holding a British passport - he had a driving licence, voted, was even briefly on the dole etc
In Carphone warehouse the other day, two young people ahead of me were unable to buy a phone on contract because they held Swedish passports, even though they both had UK bank accounts, cards etc.

Mine says it's a passport issued (in EU format ) by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It also says " Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and requires in the Name of Her Majesty.... to allow the bearer to pass freely without let and hindrance ....."
I suspect your Irish one doesn't say that :-)

Mine is Irish Republic which is the EU, however not a british isle,so i guess is a foregin land.

John, I think Melanie's probably says: "Iarrann Aire Gnóthaí na hÉireann ar gach n-aon lena mbaineann ligean dá shealbhóir seo, saoránach d'Éirinn, gabháil ar aghaidh gan bhac gan chosc agus gach cúnamh agus caomhnú is gá a thabhairt don sealbhóir."
His/Her Britannic Majesty may not have survived but that imperial touch, without let or hindrance , is there in gan bhac gan chosc.
Melanie may remember when Aire Gnóthaí na hÉireann had the adjective Eachtranacha (External or Foreign) appended to his Affairs, as it still is in the English version.
And I wonder how all the New Irish (cubs of the late lamented Celtic Tiger) react when the Old Irish insist on referring to them as "Non-Nationals". (Maybe they should ask the Non-Catholics how they put up with it!)
