Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi, Could anbody out there remember Arthur's Pie and Tea stall at the junction of Mayes Road and Hornsey Park Road, where they meet Green Lanes?

I know this is out of the boundry of Harringayonline, but I was wondering if anyone also had a picture of Arthurs stall. Bit of a shot in the dark I know but one never knows.

Sorry no photos but i do recall a large tea stall - sort of open fronted with blinds. we used to go there with my mum after shopping (before shopping city built). it was next to Rayners Tropicals pet shop and opposite a curtain stall and sweet stall (about where Boots are). It's changed so much it is hard to remember what it used to look like.
Hi Lesley, First of all, thank you for your reply, but sad to say I think it was much earlier in time that I was talking about Arthur's stall. The time I am talking about would have been about, 1956. This is the time my display picture was taken!!. Harringay as you say has changed so much. My last visit I was astounded at Shopping City, and that was in 2003. I do miss Harringay very much, but would I like to live there now with all the hustle and bustle?. No I dont think so. I am now living in Cornwall and also like this county 2nd to London of course.
Once again Lesley many thanks.

It was the '50's and '60's i was referring to, when i was much younger. wish u luck in your search for photo's. My cousin (originally a Hornsey resident) moved to Cornwall (St Colomb Major) a few years ago and his family love it there. A bit far for day trips though.
Hi Lesley, After a bit of thought I now remember the the Tropical fish shop you mention. You must have a good memory to remember the name of the shop. Yes I was also talking about the 50's and 60's. So i am now sure we are talking about the same place. I can remember coming out of the Gaumont cinima with a friend on a Sunday and having a pie and mug of tea at Arthur's
More thanks from me Lesley.

The pet shop is still there. the owners who had run it for many years (Graham and Sue) retired a couple of yeras ago but a new owner took over and still runs it as a pet shop.
That is the last old shop of the ones in Mayes Road. I belive that our local MPs (Lynne Featherstone) aunt used to run one of the stalls there. The old Gaumont, which became a bingo hall for many years is now some sort of church.
And here it is -

I guess
Hi John, Thank you very much for the picture of shop. Yes it's surprising how that gets put onto words.
Cheers Roy
Thanks again for the info Lesley. One more question- Is Maynards the sweet company still there?
Cheers Roy
Oh no - went years ago as did Caxton's and Barratts. the old Barrat's sweet factory is now the basis of The Chocolate Factory arrt studios. I think Safeways (now Mossisons) is on site of Caxtons. not sure about Maynards - where were they? No wonder it used to smell here in Hornsey - we used to get teh combined smell of liquid chocolate and liquorice - very sickly.
Do you mean the Maynards sweet factory that was in Eade Road? It was still going when I moved in, but closed in 1998 and is now the Oriental Carpet Centre - well worth a visit.
