Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So another shabby pub bites the dust - The Poachers (a weatherspoons gone horribly wrong) looking pub on the corner of Westbury Avenue and Lordship lane has closed. Any aspiring landlords out there that want to turn this eyesore into a lovely pub - we dont want anything fancy just some comfy chairs, white walls with some interesting artwork and a good Sunday lunch - oh and no Sky sports we would be very grateful as it would mean we no longer have to get a bus to the nearest decent pub

The Westbury on Westbury Ave does a good Sunday lunch, has Open Mic on a Monday, local art for sale on the walls and is more friendly than it looks from the outside! Definitely worth a try.
ooh thnks Tara - have often walked past and never quite dared go in will def give it a try
It's very much a locals pub, but the regulars are friendly and it's reasonably priced. Could do with a bit of a spruce up but they let me get up and drunkenly sing with bands on a saturday so I really like it!
We could really use more nice bars or pubs in Harringay! The only one I dare to go into is The Salisbury which is great but it would be good to have more local options.
One minute what about the Garden Ladder and the old Ale Emporium both in Harringay. Both very friendly and safe I even took my baby to the OAE and everyione was just wonderful to him, kis are not allowed in the ladder unfortunately.
Hey Tara - any pub that encourages drunken singing is my kind of place!!!!
Kavitha - totally agree the Salisbury is great but its a bit of a trek for me and the only other pubs are those scary looking weathersoons ones in Turnpike lane and wood green high St - not really my cup of tea, I dont want anything gastropub fancy but just somewhere thats a bit nicer - oh and isnt a sports bar. Its a real shame, areas like Peckham, and Camberwell - which both really remind me of Wood Green are now starting to get lots of nice pubs - I live in hope that someone will open something a bit classier in Wood Green one day!
Tamara, The Lord Palmerston on Philip Lane has a good karaoke night on a Friday and serves real ale - a rarity in this area!

if you like to work your vocal chords, come and have a singsong with Tottenham Community Choir. You don't need to be able to sing, read music or audition. We meet every Tuesday night at 19.30 at Downhills Primary School, Philip Lane. More details at www.tottenhamcommunitychoir.com
Hi Tara
I was actually a properly trained singer when I was younger - I even sang Verdi's Requiem at the Royal Albert Hall - sadly I havent sung for years and fear that a few early 20s years of hard living may have wrecked my voice!!! However would love to come along sometime - am not far from Downhills. Hubby will also love the pub if it sells real Ale - will def have to check that one out!
Wow, that's amazing! Well if you feel like coming along we're a very friendly bunch - and we go to the Palmerston for a couple of cheeky drinks after.
Hi Tunbridge
the OAE nad the Ladder are both great pubs but again just that bit too far down from me to be the pub that you just pop to on a week night without travelling too far- I am up by Lordship Lane inbweteen turnpike and wood green and there is not a lot there!
there is a new tapas bar that has opened up on Lordship Lane I haven't tried it yet - it looks nice but when I went by the other day it was populated by same fairly undesirable looking chaps (sorry thats a bit judgmental but when you live where I do you get to know the kinds of people to aviod) I hope they do well as it would be great to have a local resturant - perhaps everyone who lives up my end should give them a try!
Alternatively consider The Auld Triangle on the corner of St Thomas's and Plimsoll Road, N4, also looking for new owners. Something similar would be much loved by the neighbours there - who have a strong community network like yours and would act together to support new owners.
Hi N
Its a real shame more landlords dont seem to want to take on perhaps more run down pubs (although I can understand relunctance given the cuurent financial situation)- I went to visit a friedns pub in Lambeth on Saturday and she has turned what was a real dive into a wonderful pub family friendly, serving great food - its become a real focus of the community as its the only pub within walking distance. They are looking ot take on another pub - I begged them to come North as they have done such as amazing job of this one sadly I couldnt persude them. Lets hope someone takes our pubs on soon!
