Some of you might be aware that Haringey Council are planning to install a floodlit multi-use games area (MUGA)/ 'playzone' in Belmont Rec. For those unfamiliar with MUGAs, they the are pretty sizeable caged tarmac pitches that exist at other local parks eg Duckett's Common. The money would mostly.come from thr Football Foundation with Haringey Council adding a not-insignificant sum as a top-up.
In short, a group of us are very concerned about this. We feel that it will fundamentally change the nature of the lovely little Rec which is currently a grassed park with trees. The park is anyway well used by dog walkers, children and families, and those engaged in other outdoor activities. There's already MUGAs less than 5 minutes away in Ducketts and Downhills for those who want a hard pitch. Installation of a MUGA woould be an absolute eye-sore, reduce the amount of important grass and would, we believe, add no additional value to the park. I myselfnhave a nearly-teenage son who uses the park most weekends for sport and struggle to see how a MUGA would make a difference. There are a whole host of other reasons many of us are opposed to it, most fundamentally which is that we feel there hasn't been a clear and transparent consultation with the park users and local residents about this decision.
Knowing that there are quite a lot of Ladder dog-walkers who use the park, we'd love your opinions about placing a MUGA at Belmont Rec to be made known to the council by emailing the local councillors BY 28TH OCTOBER (the end of the consultation period).
I was recently sent a consultation by Commonplace on this, so it looks like they're consulting now. See here
Unfortunately that Commonplace consultation only permits the respondent to select one of the three proposed locstion options for the MUGA within the park - there is no option to opt for none of these pre-determined options. So it's a non-consultation in that sense. The council maintain they have already done their consultation on having a MUGA sited in Belmont Rec but many of us feel that this has been incredibly superficial and hasn't truly ascertained the views of locals and park users.
Why replace the lovey grassed over area with an ugly play zone when you could just stick up a few ball hoops in the field?
Almost bankrupt Haringay council wasting more money.
There’s a petition https://c.org/RL6pCy8LNg. I appreciate Belmont Rec as a quiet space.
